Scripture does not rule out self-defence or protecting oneself or one's family from harm (Mt 26:53; Lk 22:36).  There are many ways to address this, and one should be clear that the presence of a lethal weapon can lead to fatalities. The reference to swords into plowshares points to a time in the future when warfare will be replaced by universal peace. It would not apply to self defence.

Matthew 26:53 doesn't advocate war. Jesus refused to take the help that way. Luke 22:36 was an indication that possession of weapon amounts to transgression. So a believer in Christ will not own weapons meant for killing somebody.

Peter didn't believe in Christ (though He drew it for the wrong reason)?

"Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus."

That was Peter known for acting impulsively. Jesus cautioned,  "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.(Matthew 26: 52)

Im going to make a few observations, about comments made by two people above. First off, Peter did act impulsively, that much is true, which is what Jesus was chewing him out for-for everything there is a time and place (proverbs) and peter had the wrong time and place. Also, there is a key difference between owning a gun for self defense, and living by one-a person who keeps a gun just to protect his family is not living by it. He may own it, but hes not living by it, hes not a mercenary who gets paid to kill people and he doesnt use the gun to obtain things he wants forcibly.

And the most important thing im going to address, is the belief issue. Peter, did believe in Christ, in fact he probably had more faith then most of the other disciples-and did great things for the Lord. To say that he-or any other christian for that matter, does not believe because he carried a weapon (which Jesus told him to buy only hours before) is not only wrong, its a flat out lie. That is not found anywhere in scripture.

I felt that point was important as well the_patriot2015. It may seem a small point to some, and maybe contentious to others. Prophesy had to be fulfilled, and was. I do not covet weapons, or do I even feel comfortable around them. Then again, I have seen cars used as weapons (which was not designed for that usage). It is a matter of intent. One can find (if so motivated), a weapon in almost anything, including words.

Like I have said before it is not the gun. That is just a piece of metal. It is the hands that the gun ends up in.Unfortunately there are many, many people in our world who should not have a gun. That is impossible to control that.

Some use guns, some use rocks, and still other use words as "weapons".

I have guns but pray I never find a use for them.

I have rocks but pray I never throw one at another.

I have words but pray I use them in love and kindness.

Well said.

I own a gun and I WOULD use it.  But only to protect myself or my family; I wouldn't use it to protect property.  And I pray I never have to because it would be hard to live with if you took a life.

like I said I do own a gun, I would never use it just to keep someone from say, stealing a car, unless of course my kids were inside, but its a pretty safe bet if your in my house in the middle of the night unannounced, you can make a safe bet I won't be wasting time trying to figure out if your after my TV or my kids.
