Sorry, but the numbers confirm the widespread existence of polygamy/ polygyny. According to the numbers 83% of societies (and let's not forget the Mormons and Native Americans before the White Man and even after). Polygamy is widely accepted among different societies worldwide. According to the Ethnographic Atlas, of 1,231 societies noted, 588 had frequent polygyny, 453 had occasional polygyny, 186 were monogamous and 4 had polyandry.[5] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy

Yes, but that doesn't mean that God was pleased with it or that the Bible is endorsing a polygamous lifestyle. The tells us it happened without any sort of approval coming from God for it. Not surprised. This is an age of serial monogamy... As some have mentioned, God's plan for marriage never changed. One man for one wife forever (til death or for life however you look at it). As some have pointed out it took only one generation for mankind to mess up God's plan for marriage in their life. No polygamy was condoned condoned by God. The passage that would seem to condone this was rather hyperbole used to express how evil it was what had done (2 Samuel 12:8). Â Â

Both are a spiritual intertwining and binding. This is what is so bad about fornication (sex outside of marriage). Â

Look at the constant turmoil in the house of Jacob and Leah and Rachel and the concubines. No man can rightly love a woman who has to share him with another. No woman will love a man deeply completely that has to share him with another. There can be no harmony. And after all, isn't the deck already stacked against successful marriages as it is? Two fallen sin natured people trying to make one harmonious life together is a fallen world...
