I personally hate the whole concept of a hate crime, but if you are going to have them on the books, how much more hateful can you get than this? Crimes are not committed out of love for the victim. "Hate" is a statement about the feeling or thoughts, that motivate a crime. To me, this is tantamount to charging people for thinking - as in a thought crime. God can do that, He weighs the heart, and judges it. I think as people, our laws need to address behavior. If I am beaten because someone hates me, I am not that concerned with how that person feels, I am concerned with what they did to me. Harming me against my will, when I have done nothing to deserve it, is already a crime, regardless of the perpetrators feelings about me.

In theory I agree with you. But sometimes local communities fail to take the appropriate action. I think the "hate crime" label forces local law enforcement and politicians to get serious. It was a heinous, evil act and should be treated accordingly.
