What does it mean to sin?

The superficial answer is “Breaking of God’s law.”

The deeper answer is “Sinning is the state or condition of all man.”

For example, a fish swims and a sinner sins. Everyone is born into a condition called sin (Except for Jesus who is without sin).

No one can escape this condition by obeying the law or doing righteous works. The bible compare the righteousness of a sinner to a filthy rag.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

The law was given to make everyone aware that he/she is a sinner.

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The law cannot save anyone. But the law is necessary. Because without it, everyone will not know what is sin. Resulting in not having the need for a saviour (Jesus).

So are all those who died under the law of Moses dead and not saved ?

 

About Jesus

Jesus was of the seed of Abraham and David, so he was human, in the likeness of  sinful flesh.

Some say he was tempted in all points as we are, so he must had a sin nature to be tempted.

If the sin nature doctrine is true - Jesus was a spotted lamb.

So true, the law was given that sin might be made manifest. So as you brought forth,  mankind might see their need of a Savior. Would to God that all mankind would see their need.

Are you sure your final paragraph is stating what it is that you want to say?

Seems to me sin and knowledge of sin predates the Law of Moses.

Peace with God Through Faith Romans 5 ESV

 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,  and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,  and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.  And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.  For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.  Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,  so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Well it is 2 different thing between existence of sin and knowing you are a sinner. 

Take for example, someone born beautiful or ugly does not know that until he or she looks into a mirror. In the same way, the law of God is like a mirror that shows us that we are sinners.

Our inability to completely live as God intended us to live is evidenced by particular acts of sin and trespasses.  This is something far deeper than trespassing particular rules and speaks to the fall of humanity.   Sin as a whole is related to our inability to live the perfect physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy life God had originally planned for humanity.  It is our falling short of God's intention and our inability to even reach it through our own efforts.

I think Christians often lose sight that our salvation is not just forgiveness of individual trespasses but also becoming a new creation in Christ which directly addresses our sin-nature and the fall of humanity.   Forgiveness deals with God overlooking particular trespasses we've committed.  Being a new creation in Christ with a new nature directly deals with our inherent sin nature.

What does it mean to sin?

SIN...Biblical archery term.
To miss the mark. The target. The standard. The law. The will of God.I can't do it, hit the mark that is. God says so. Unless I call God a liar.
But.
God says, I am dead to sin. I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. A new creation.
I can do all things, in Christ!  Not I, but Christ. In me.
