Good post, this verse speaks to exactly what I said before, we need to let God transform us so that we can then transform the culture...as the rest of Ch. 12 goes on to state.

I have a TV and satellite connectivity, but I don't watch it much at all. Perhaps a half hour of the news in the evening and maybe a couple of hours on the weekends if I'm being lazy.

But, I think I will be getting rid of the satellite once my year contract is up. I agree with SuperJew that TV isn't a moral device, rather it is the programming that streams from it. I know that SkyAngel is a great service to have if you like to watch a lot of Christian television, but there are heretics even on SkyAngel.

I prefer to spend the time reading or with my family doing interactive things. It has been said that the television is the soundtrack to life. In some homes it is AlWAYS on, non-stop.

I applaud anyone who doesn't watch TV. Worldly programming turns the TV into a "lust device." Worldly programming is all about sin, in one way or another.

Even watching "good" programming can become a hinderance. TV can be an easy temptation for not getting things done that need to be done. Is the house clean? (Dishes, laundry, etc.,) Have we spent time in the Word today? With Jesus? Our families and friends?

I'm not saying that we need to have our dishes done every time before watching any TV, but what is our pattern? If the house is usually messy and we're watching tv, then that is not being a good steward of our time or of the things God has given us to be stewards of. Our homes are part of that. If we've been blessed with a house or an apartment to live in, we should honor God by taking care of it.

It's not just a matter of discerning "what's on?"

I'm not saying everyone should throw out their TVs. (I think we would all live just fine without them, however.) I still have a TV but I have not had any channels, cable or local, for just over a year now. I thought it would be difficult! It was one of the best choices I ever made. I use it only for DVD's now. That way I can monitor what comes into my home and how often.
