Zayit, you referenced pentecost, is it unreasonable to assume that this form of tongues was a one-time occurance?

Yes, I belive it is reasonable though we have no reference to say that it won't or couldn't happen again. I believe that it happened on a grand scale because it was Shavuot , which is one of the three pilgram festivals all males 20 and over are required to travel to Jerusalem for, that is why we see all these different tongues being spoken. You may wonder why not just speak the tongue of the empire ( Rome) which was Greek, becasue then it would not be seen as a miracle of the outpouring of the promised Spirit. I believe that the speakers were also amazed, so it was benificial to all.

Some do not understand that these were all Jews, from the dispersion, ones who hadn't returned when the others did after the captivity. This was a prophecy from Yo'el which many believe holds true to today though.

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

I believe that that time may have been the beginning, also it may have been put on hold after that till this time we are living in when the Jews have returned to their land and the L-RD will once again pour out his Spirit as he promised. Remember many prophcies have two-parts to them, just like the coming of Messiah.

You cut out the meaning , it starts in verse 20:

20 Brothers, don't be children in your thinking. In evil, be like infants; but in your thinking, be grown-up.

21 In the Torah it is written, "By other tongues, by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people. But even then they will not listen to me," says ADONAI.

22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole congregation comes together with everybody speaking in tongues, and uninstructed people or unbelievers come in, won't they say you're crazy? 24 But if you all prophesy, and some unbeliever or uninstructed person enters, he is convicted of sin by all, he is brought under judgment by all, 25 and the secrets of his heart are laid bare; so he falls on his face and worships God, saying, "God is really here among you!"

If someone from the outside where to come into a congregational meeting and saw that everyone was speaking in tongues ( and I believe this is spiritiaul tongues here ) then they would hear jibberish and think everyone was crazy and run out the door. But if they entered and heard prophecy coming from everyone and in agreement, being interpreted then they would know that the Holy Spirit of the true G-d was working there and be convicted in their hearts. The prophecying I think he means is to reveal through the Holy Spirit speaking through the people things about that visitor that only the L-RD himself knows, not things like a seer would say but things of the heart, of sin against G-d and they would be convicted but not necessrliy repent and recieve Yeshua but they would be responsible come judgement time.

Sorry . . . I'm still missing something.

How is tongues a sign for unbelievers if upon hearing tongues they think we are all mad?

How do the verses before this explain it? I don't see it. :P

Neb, the proper usage of this gift would be for some one single person in the meeting of the people to speak in a tongue and someone else that is there to interpret what that person said.

Paul is telling them that they should not all be speaking at he same time.

When this happens, as it is supposed to, it is quite uplifting. Usually the person who speaks has at a least a general idea of what is being said if not each word or phrase. When the other person replies what was said it really gets the attention of those visiting.

Some organizations use tongue praising where everyone speaks, prays and sometimes shout at the same time and it can be very disturbing to those outside the congregation, especially young kids.

As for me I personally can be pretty happy in most services until they bring out the snakes....... having been bitten at home by a really sneaky copperhead, I just pack up my bible and hit the door....

OK - let's leave the Snake-handling cookoos out of this, OK?

Not all of us charasmaniacs believe in that gross misapplication of Scripture, OK?

That is how it sounds to me, perhaps Paul was thinking of those condemning the believers coming into their gatherings and thinking to make fun of them and cause disrutption? We have to remember we don't have the questioning letter only the response. :noidea:

Yes, and that Paul himself admits that he isn't a very good speaker. Makes his writings difficult to grasp at times.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
