Recently Creature from the Black Lagoon was on tv. My kids thought it was hilarious (from 9 to 13 years old) and could not believe that it was considered scary. I'd never seen it before outside of some clips but it was remarkable how slow the pace of the movie was (I did not watch the whole thing).

Without the kind of technology we have today, most scary movies would be unlikely to scare modern audiences. That is if they rely on action sequences. A cleverly designed plot and good acting can do wonders.

Of course there are different genre's within horror. Slashers are not my thing really. I like those more that build with tension and creepy atmosphere. Movies like The Thing and Alien & Aliens did that very well (Aliens may not be a true horror as it's essentially Jaws on a another planet). Speaking of which, Jaws has to be one of my all-time favourites.

Admittedly, both horror and also sci-fi movies back then went through much dialogging before anything "scary" started happening. There was the aspect of main theme build up with the story and the cheesier ones seemed to take a lot of time just trying to attempt quality. A lot of them were purposely meant to be bombs just to sell tickets at the box office. Audiences went for it hook, line, and sinker. But yes, some of the sci-fi flicks were really bad!

There was a 1997 movie called Cube. It was scary but gripping and exciting. I really enjoyed it (I think I still have it on VCR)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a "slasher" and at the time very shocking. Cheesy as all get out, but it did have a lot of suspense. These sorts of films are not really what I enjoy as horror movies. Jaws was also pretty good for it's time. I also saw Jaws II, Jaws 3D, and there was one more bad follow up Jaws movie that was pretty bad. I'm not sure if it was an official "Jaws" flick, but had the name.

The technology of today's scary movies are very impressive and have that "in-the-face" effect to them. That ups the frightening aspect of them. I'll go for pretty much the gambut on them if they aren't deeply into the satanic. That's where I have to draw the line. Some of the classic horror movies did do some, but were subtle and discreet. They never seemed to go so way out like they do now. Not my thing.

Ah, yes. VHS videos. Competitors of Sony's Betamax and VHS could never beat them for quality. Just more time on the cassettes in hours. I still have a collection and my old but very good VCR. Still works and it even does a self cleaning to the capstans and record/playback heads on rewinds. I've got the first three legendary performances of The Beatles when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. It even has the commercials they aired then. Some are pretty amusing. I bought in 2001, from a television add when this media was still out there. Davy Jones was also in the cast of Oliver just several years before The Monkees. He was just a kid! And the puppet Topo Gigio the Mouse was on one of the tapes. Great stuff!

Agree on the satanic part. One of the more disturbing movies I saw was, of all things, the made-for-TV versions of the Stephen King's "Storm of the Century". That just gave me such an evil vibe. But this digresses from the 'old horror flicks' of the OP.

Yeah, that's the one. A pretty horrible plot compared to the rest of them. One and a half stars out of four.

**** - 2+1/2 stars. Not a good flick.

Some of Stephen King's movies are a bit hard to take. I've not seen Storm of the Century and quite a few others. I think the last one was Misery or was it Thinner? King is pretty intense and he does deserve credit as an author. What an imagination. I guess we are veering off topic a bit. :b:

I think I saw Cube listed for free at Tubi TV (app or website).   Maybe I will check it out.

I don't like slashers either or anything bloody.   I enjoy the suspense movies.   Jaws was a favorite!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
