my pastor has been teaching a series on the Minor Prophets,  what does everyone think about these prophets & what God told them to say to the nation of Isreal?  do you think these messages apply to what's happening now in this country???  what is everyone's opinion on this?

A basic principle of any scripture is that it can have multiple meaning, such as 1 meaning to the people of the time when it was given and other meanings even for today.

Having said that, I'm not very familiar with the minor prophets. Since I'm not, I have also started reading them. I did find a verse in Zechariah ch.11 that seemed pertinent to us today. Since I'm uncertain of the meaning I'm not going to give the verse number. I also hope I'm wrong.

One needs always to be aware of the context and audience of really any passage in scripture. That said there are universal truths that will transcend the cultural context of these writers. How we view the world is different than those of people of the Biblical times. But people are still people and our underlying emotions, morality and ethics are still pretty similar. We just have the advantage of thousands of years of progress in society and technology.

Well the key is to remember that all of those prophets had specific messages for that nation, those people, and at that specific time.

So if you are asking how to apply the prophets to our country, and our people, at this specific time.... simply put, you can't.

Their messages, do not directly apply to us.

Now that said, the old testament is for us an example..  An example of what can happen.   And all of those things certainly CAN happen.  G-d most certainly can bring judgement on America, and I for one, believe it will happen.  I just don't know when.

Love, love, love the minor prophets.  Habakkuk is my favorite.

Nahum, I call Jonah part 2, as it describes what eventually happened to those Ninevites who repented before God.

And there's more.

But to answer the question, yes, there are things to learn from these books.

While not speaking directly to us, the volume of applications to our lives is staggering.

When I read them, I become aware of my own sin more and of God's holiness.

How are there minor prophets when there are 24 elders around the throne of Christ?

These 24 Elders are the Prophets.

Just like there are 4 living beasts which are the Gospels.

The word major and minor prophet is in reference to the length of what was written.  Ergo, the major prophets wrote long books of Old Testament prophecy and the minor prophets wrote the short[er] books of the Old Testament containing prophecy.  And the minor prophets are directed at a more narrowly focused time frame and/or people group.  It's a man-made term.

I've never heard anyone say that the 24 elders in Revelation 4 are the Old Testament prophets.   The Bible doesn't say that. And I would say that this is impossible as there were hundreds and hundreds of prophets [and prophetesses] in the Old Testament and even in the New.

I'd like to know where you read that.  The Bible contains both the major [long books] and minor [short books - narrow focus/people group] prophets:

Major prophets: [FOUR, but five books] Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel [Jeremiah also writing Lamentations]

Minor prophets: [TWELVE] Habakkuk, Joel, Jonah, Nahum, Amos, Zechariah, Malachi, Hosea, Haggai, Zephaniah, Micah, and Obadiah.
