I was working in the yard today and it dawned on me, I think I have to go with  "Don't Think Twice It's All Right."  When I was first learning to play guitar, I recall liking Mr. Tambourine Man, but I knew it because of the Byrds. That was true of a lot of his songs. In tact, I think I knew "Don't Think Twice" because of Peter, Paul, and Mary. They did a great job of it, but it lacks the harmonica. While I said earlier that I was not a fan of Bob's voice, or was it really more is style, I just listened to "Don't Think Twice", and he was better than I remembered.

Here you are, Omega. I think it would be well worth your time to comb through the commentaries I've written, if not just to scan them for some good tunes, posted lyrics, and great pics. This is a wonderful topic and a really tremendous thread. A lot of love and effort went into it.

To quote a comical TV commercial, "Good stuff, Maynard!"

Mr. Tambourine Man, was the title track of The Byrds premier LP and placed them into immediate fame. It is still one of my favorites from Roger (Jim) McGuinn's band with backup member, talented David Crosby and crooner, Gene Clark. As mentioned previously, I have always been tremendously fond of how they were able to cover and expound on Dylan's best works.

  1. Mr. Tambourine Man

Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you

Though I know that evening's empire
    Has returned into sand
    Vanished from my hand

Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
    My weariness amazes me
    I'm branded on my feet

I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to

Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship

My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
    To be wandering

I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
    Into my own parade
Cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it

Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you
Though you might hear laughing, spinning
    Swinging madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escaping on the run

And but for the sky, there are no fences facing
And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow

    You're seeing that he's chasing
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you
Then take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come following you

     Dylan ~ Mr. Tambourine Man

Peter, Paul, & Mary covered this one by Bob Dylan so well and was undoubtedly expressed optimally by them moreover than any other folk group or musician. Don't Think Twice It's Alright, from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan LP, this tune was dedicated to his former girlfriend, Suze Rotolo. Here is a commentary in background for this heartfelt song. Maybe I have too many favorite Bob Dylan tunes in my mind!

P.S. I can't recall now if this was posted previously or not. If so, it's worth a repeat in my opinion.

This song was written by Bob Dylan after his girlfriend Suze Rotolo moved to Italy to study at the university leaving him in New York. Only he made it look in a song as if it was he who left her. By the way, Rotolo is pictured walking with Dylan on the cover of this album.

Bob Dylan said about this track, "A lot of people make it sort of a love song - slow and easygoing. But it isn't a love song. It's a statement that maybe you can say something to make yourself feel better. It's as if you were talking to yourself."
This song was released as a single by "Wonder Who?" in 1965. The joke is that The Four Seasons, being at the peak of their popularity with "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You", decided to record a song to see if they could make a hit without a big name on it. They could: the single climbed to number 12 in the USA.
The "When your rooster crows at the break of dawn" line was explained by Suze Rotolo in her memoir: she and Bob Dylan used to live near a poultry supplier in Greenwich Village and heard roosters in the morning when they stayed up all night sometimes.

"Don't Think Twice It's All Right"

Well, it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If'n you don't know by now
And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow

When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window, and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm a-traveling on
But don't think twice, it's all right

And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
The light I never knowed
And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road

But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
But we never did too much talking anyway
But don't think twice, it's all right

So it ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
Like you never done before
And it ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more

I'm a-thinking and a-wonderin' walking down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I am told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

So long honey, baby
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well

I ain't a-saying you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

During my Freshman year in highschool, we had a building by the center courtyard where many students would gather and hangout on the concrete benches, listening to the stereophonic PA system inside. A few of our upperclassmen did DJ volunteer work in similarity to a radio broadcast.

I hung out with the Sophomore kids as they had befriended me.

We'd sit close to the sound system to catch the tunes that were being piped out of the system. The ones that manned the stereo were stone cold Dylan fans. Many of the tunes they selected were from Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. One LP. Here's one I remember well from our lunch break, Positively 4th Street.

P.S. I have this album and personally recommend it. At the time of its first few years of issues, a full sized wall poster was also included. It's now rare and hard to find, but the album is still widely available on CD.

  1. Positively 4th Street

You've got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin'
You've got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that's winnin'

You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you're so hurt, why then don't you show it?
You say you've lost your faith, but that's not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it

I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you're in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it

No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And tho I know you're dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don't you understand, it's not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

I think that goes without saying, Speks. Present company included. That was quite a bash on Bob, but I suppose you're entitled. Your comments reminded me of the tongue lashing from the UK press with Dylan when they complained being disappointed he presented his own music to the public and veered away from the Woody Guthrie music he started his career with. When it came to responding to insults slinging from the press, guess who came out with more apparent intelligence?

Speaking of :off-topic:...

Robert Zimmerman brings to mind the harmonica, and the harmonica brings to mind Charlie Musselwhite. "Black Water" is a favorite of mine.

I remember distinctly that Bob played a Hohner Marine Band harmonica. They were specifically designed to fit in a harmonica neck frame and never lose its grip, being curved at the edge.

At age 16, my friends and I began getting into Hohner's newly manufactured Blues Harp model.

The keys were far more easy to bend and play the howl of the sound when you force it to go into the similarities of a flute twill. This brings it to pushing octaves over the note they were intended.

Mom bought me a Marine Band C harmonica for my 11th Christmas knowing this was his model used on stage.

Bob did not play the harmonica on this track. In fact, he composed far more songs with the use of a Martin D-18 or Gibson sunburst acoustic without incorporating his limited skills as a harmonica player. Once Dylan went "electric" the signature Hohner Marine Band was seldom used. On occasion for nostalgia's sake, Dylan would throw a few notes from his harmonica, but the use of an acoustic guitar was never given up as a major source of his overall style. It would always remain so to the present. Bob did have a preference for a Fender Stratocaster and still uses one on stage.

Dylan refuses to be what everyone else wants him to be and many people can't stand it. They just can't box him neatly into any category as they love to do. He is one of the most truly individualistic public figures I have ever come across. While I do not always like the paths that this leads him on, I have a certain respect for this. There is an honesty about him. I also think this allows him to see things from a unique perspective which I have often found valuable. Just read through some of his deeper lyrics. This man is a genius. He isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it doesn't take away from this fact.

Great songwriter but I gotta say cover versions are often better than the originals. Clapton's version of "Don't Think Twice..." at the tribute concert is just amazing, and who would deny Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower"?

The list is just a conversation starter. You could add more of you want ;)
