Latin speaking in churches?

Why do some churches speak in Latin when most people in the congregation does not speak in Latin? Is that biblical here in America? I know went to one church that spoke in latin and most people spoke the English language.. and i dont' understand how someone can learn from that... almost as if a pastor were preaching in tongues without an interperter..

They seriously still do that? I had no idea...it's cool in a historical, me-liking-old-things way...but yeah...I don't really see the point of it.

Some Catholic parishes have permission to use Latin in parts of the Mass, but I don't think any Roman churches are authorized to use Latin for the whole Mass.

There are a few 'breakaway' rebellious RCC churches who still do the Tridentine Mass......

A friend of mine is Catholic. She said growing up that's all the songs were sung in was Latin and she never gained an understanding of it. I must agree-I don't think I would understand it either.

This is a very good question. I can give you some background why the Catholic Church still have certain Parishes and Special Masses that are said in Latin. First of all, Latin is a universal language and is the root of many words in English, Spainish ect. Every Catholic Mass in the world was said in Latin until Vatican II in the 1963. What this meant was that any Catholic could go to mass anywhere in the world and understand what was going on. This goes back to the principal of one universal Church. After Vatican II, the Church allowed Mass to be said in language of each country. So Mass in the United States is now said in English. However, the Bishop of each Diocese can allow Latin Masses to be said, but it must be approved by the Bishop. The Diocese I live in, which is Lincoln, Nebraska, has one Church in Lincoln that still says Mass in Latin. The reason behind this is keep the tradition alive, where it has died out in most of the world.

The question of what is a Tridentine Mass came up. The Tridentine Mass was the old style of Mass, using Latin. Each Diocese still has the right to allow Tridentine Mass, but must first be approved by the Bishop. There are certain groups of Catholics who don't accept Vatican II teachings. They would like to keep all the old traditions, such as saying mass in Latin. However, this is wrong not to accept Vatican II, and they are not in line with the Church. This is called being in schism with the Church. Hope this helps out.

I'd really like to learn Latin...it's unfortunate that the opportunities to do so are becoming harder to come by. I do know a little...enough to read a lot of school mottos, for instance, but not enough to understand an entire passage. It's one of my goals, though! I already know French (which is how I learned a lot of the Latin words I know), so I guess it wouldn't be that hard. I think I'll learn it before I try to learn Spanish and Italian. Okay, I don't actually know when I'll get a chance to do all of those, but it's healthy to dream
