The Word discerns the thoughts and intent of the heart.

I think it can be both or either.....the Lord judging/discerning us and/or we ourselves judging/discerning ourselves.

....For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Could be but not necessarily. It could refer to God and His word.

Friends forgive offenses. But we must first see the offense before our heart can become contrite. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

The Lord will discipline us, if need be. It's for our own good.

Hebrews 12:7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

I would agree with almost everything thing here except using the word Judging when it comes to God

If God were to judge us by our deeds, we would all be a heap of trouble.

But God gives us mercy and grace

Mercy God NOT giving us what we do deserve

Grace God giving us what we DO NOT deserve

I rest on His mercy and grace

But there is wisdom is "....For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged."

We are chastened and also judged by God. 1 Corinthians 11:32

I see were it says God can judge the thoughts and intentions of our hearts....but is that judging us? What is the outcome of judgment but condemnation.
