European flag turns 50

18.11.2005 - 11:06 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

The European flag turns 50 this week, with its twelve golden stars representing "perfection and entirety" like the twelve months of the year, the twelve apostles or the signs of the zodiac.

The image was first taken up by the human rights organisation, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg in 1955 after five years of quarreling.

The then 14-strong council now has 46 European member countries and still uses the flag along with the EU, which adopted the official symbol in 1985.

Its original design comes from Salvador de Madariaga, the founder of the Bruges-based College of Europe, with de Madariaga's stars representing the peoples of Europe and the circle, unity.

Arsene Heitz modified the idea in the 1950s proposing 15 stars, with one of the stars referring to the French-occupied German region of Saarland.

The Germans rejected 15 and the French rejected 14 in a bid to curb German assertiveness before settling on 12.

But the EU flag might have looked entirely different than it does today, with the 12 star design beating off several other ideas such as quasi-Olympic circles, a variation of the US' stars and stripes and a design using national flags with a tiger motif.

EU flag row in Prague

Meanwhile, the Czech president on Thursday resisted fresh pressure at home to put up the EU flag at his official residence.

Two artists were barred by the president's guard from flying the gold-and-blue at the Prague castle - Mr Klaus' seat - on Thursday (17 November), Czech media report.

The artists said most other EU heads of state do so as a recognition of their countries' membership of the European Union.

Ex-president Vaclav Havel joined supporters of the move, commenting that it was "scandalous" the flag was missing from the official building.

But Mr Klaus, known as a staunch eurosceptic, said he had not received a "mandate, order or request" concerning the flag when he took up his presidential post and does not intend to entertain one now.

The incident happened on the eve of Friday's visit to Prague by a European Commission goodwill delegation led by president Jose Manuel Barroso.

Netherlands and UK could derail EU budget deal

21.11.2005 - 22:21 CET | By Andrew Rettman

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The Netherlands is emerging as another potential threat to EU efforts to get a 2007-2013 budget agreement in December, on top of a long-running row over the British rebate.

The Dutch government promised its parliament two weeks ago to secure a

'Land for peace concept has failed'

By HERB KEINON

The road map itself is revolutionary in that it replaced the time-worn - but failed - concept of land for peace with another formula: independence for security, Eyal Arad, a top Sharon political strategist, said on Tuesday.

Arad, who addressed the foreign press in Jerusalem on the topic of "Where is Ariel Sharon heading?", said that if the sides abided by the stages of the road map, then the Palestinians would ultimately gain an independent state, and Israel would get security.

Arad termed land-for-peace a "naive proposal," which erroneously presupposed that the root of the conflict was the occupation of the territories, and that if the occupation would only end, then peace would follow. This has proven "false philosophically, and naive politically," he said, pointing out that the Oslo process, which was based on the land-for-peace formula, was followed by the worst terror the country ever faced.

After the press conference, Arad told The Jerusalem Post that Sharon will not - before the upcoming elections - define which settlements he envisions as part of the settlement blocs.

Sharon, during his press conference Monday night explaining his decision to leave the Likud and form a new party titled National Responsibility, spoke of Israel ultimately holding on to major settlement blocs and security zones.

As is his practice, however, he did not delineate those areas. This ambiguity has led to frequent questions as to whether settlements such as Beit El and Ofra, among others, were in Sharon's mind part of the major settlement blocs.

Arad did not give any indication that this question would be cleared up before the elections, saying instead that it would be a mistake to detail these areas since this could possibly compromise Israel's negotiating position.

At the same time, Finance Minister Ehud Olmert, a close Sharon confidant, told Army Radio that Sharon wanted "to continue a policy that will bring about the permanent borders of Israel."

He said, "We are talking about the desire to define the permanent borders of Israel in the framework of an agreement that is based on the... road map."

Olmert said he had an "hour-and-a-half meeting with a very senior Palestinian personality, one of the most important people in the Palestinian Authority" on Tuesday. Without identifying the official, Olmert said "we are making efforts to create momentum, to create a better understanding to persuade them to fight terror."

Arad made clear during his briefing that even though Sharon was splitting from the Likud, a step he described as something that would likely "revolutionize the Israeli political structure," the prime minister would not promote any new diplomatic plan, but rather would stick with the road map. New plans were not always good, Arad said, dashing expectations that Sharon would welcome or put forward any new diplomatic initiative. He said that the road map had not yet been given a real chance to succeed.

Arad stressed, as his boss always does, that the condition for moving forward along the road map was Palestinian action to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure. "The road map postulates total dismantling of all terrorist apparatus," Arad said. "The time for overlooking Palestinian violations is over."

Arad said Sharon's acceptance of the road map - and its vision of a two-state solution - caused an ideological revolution inside the Likud, which long dreamt of Greater Israel. Once the road map was accepted, he said, a split inside the Likud became unavoidable and was a "natural and logical outgrowth" of Sharon's acceptance of the idea of a Palestinian state.

Although buoyed by Tuesday's surveys indicating that Sharon would outpoll both Labor and Likud if the elections were held today, Arad still refused to get into the question of which party was Sharon's preferred coalition partner.

Arad said Sharon had always favored national unity governments, and that any party would be welcome in a Sharon-led coalition as long as it wanted to implement the road map and agreed with the prime minister's domestic platform.

Regarding the possibility that Shimon Peres would join Sharon's new party, Arad said this was "a possibility" but that he was "not qualified" to discuss this either on Sharon or Peres's behalf.

In a related development, the Prime Minister's Office said that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called Sharon Tuesday to wish him well in his new political venture. According to Sharon's office, Mubarak said he was interested in continuing his close working relationship with Sharon.

According to Sharon's office, Spanish King Juan Carlos also phoned Sharon Tuesday to ask him to attend the gathering in Spain next week marking the 10th anniversary of the Barcelona Conference.

The Spanish monarch said many European and Arab leaders - such as Mubarak, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali - would attend, and said Sharon's participation "would be very important for advancing relations between Israel and Arab countries." Sharon, according to his office, thanked the King but declined, citing the "the domestic political situation" as the reason.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom is scheduled to attend instead.

The Barcelona Conference in 1995 launched the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, or Barcelona Process, which is a framework of political, economic and social relations between the EU and countries on the Southern Mediterranean. It is unique in that Israel takes part in the meetings of this forum alongside Syria, Algeria and Lebanon. Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and the Palestinian Authority are also involved.

EUROMED

The chatter on our discussion board has been fascinating. But, what else can we expect. For those of us who are into Bible prophecy, the news has begun falling around us like ripe apples.

In Germany, Angela Merkel has been sworn in and is already off on her first visits. As you may know, I thought something might happen that would keep former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in power. I was wrong. But, there's nothing new about that.

In the meantime, our man Javier Solana has finally got his foot on the ground in the ancient land of Israel. Not only that, Solana's Rapid Reaction Forces are, at the time of this writing, involved in a large exercise preparing themselves for future military interventions. I wonder where?

Ariel Sharon, politically standing on the abyss, suddenly decided to start a new government. Whether he's successful or not, as far as prophecy is concerned, it doesn't matter anymore. It's too late. Why? Euromed is here.

I would like you to take a good look at it. Euromed is based on Javier Solana's 1995 Euro-Mediterranean Partnership for Peace (Read about it here)>>>> http://www.epp-ed.org/press/showPR.asp?PRC...&PRContentLg=en

Friends, if this isn't a covenant with many, I don't know what would be. But, of course, that doesn't mean it's our covenant with many.

The 1995 agreement is also known as the Barcelona Process. Now, we learn that on the 27th of this month, the Euromed nations are all going to meet and decided ways to strengthen the old Barcelona Process. And, this time, they plan on making it work. They plan on having a free trade and security area over the Mediterranean region by 2010. And, they plan on using the money from the EU's next seven-year budget period to do it (Read about it here)>>>> http://www.euractiv.com/Article?tcmuri=tcm...82-16&type=News

Friends, it's coming together. There are even a few surprises about what happened behind closed doors in Germany. They lead straight to our man in Brussels.

Now, I've got work to do.

Stay tuned!

Trouble brewing in Russia

I just wanted to let you know that there is very quiet falling back to the bad old days in Russia.

As you will probably know Vladamir Putin is an ex KGB officer and he has had the old statue of the founder of the KGB raised in front of the old office.

There have been stories of arrests of government critics and I need to tell you some of those are Christians.

A woman in my church has emailed a dream to me of Christians being tortured in modern day Russia.

Rollin- can you talk to your Russian contact about this? Do we need to worry?

The EU is all palls with Russia though because of the energy crisis.

I've read some articles from a couple of the EU higher ups that seem to suggest that the EU has no intentions of joining up with Russia with anything more than economic & terrorism ties. The EU seems to keep trying to passify Russia, in what appears to be an attempt to buy more time, possibly so the EU can be able to defend it's borders in the future against a possible Russian attack. Christian's in Russia should get out before it's too late, but Christians in the EU shouldn't be fearful of Russia. I'd be more leary of the EU pushing it's global agenda.

This will not last. As the prophet Ezekiel says, Magog (Russia) will march south with the Arabs in order to take a spoil. But Tarshish and it's young lion cubs will ask, "Are you going to take a spoil"?

I have always wondered if Tarshish was either Great Britain or Spain. No one seems to be real sure, but you said you believe it is Britain. I was also thinking that Tarshish could be the EU, since it makes mention of the lion cubs (new nations joining EU).

In any event, Russia and the EU will end up going their separate ways, at least temporarily, or until ALL nations are gathered against Jerusalem.

thanks rollin

I do think that tarshish is GB because the word refers to "the islands of tarshish" and I know that Britain is made of over a thousand islands.

England as a nation is certainly being VERY careful where Russia is concerned because of the dodgey nature of Gas and oil supplies, doing all it can ethically (and not so ethically to my mind) to keep things going.

be aware rollin that most Britons do not see themselves as Europeans. Europe does not have a consitution of it's own despite some MEP's best efforts. For goodness sake don't call the frnech Europeans! They will be after you!

The largest power by pure economic strength is Germany.

We hear very little about Spain's presence in the EU- only that it has grown in prosperity over the past 20 years greatly.

this bit about all nations turning against Israel- is that in the trib?

thanks

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
