20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.'

(Have no sin?)

What did Jesus mean when He said they would have no sin? What are the dynamics and specifics of those particular verses?

Perhaps these verses will give added understanding:

John 9:39-41 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. 40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? 41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Romans 7:8-13 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

So, in essence, with the truth of the passages of Scripture above, are the Commandments necessary and a vital part, for the understanding and reception of the saving grace provided by the Lord Jesus Christ?

In Acts 8 Philip is sent to an Ethiopian eunuch and these were his final words after explaining that Jesus was the one prophesied about in Isaiah:

Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

It was Jesus who commanded that we should go out into the world, preach the gospel and be baptized in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. So the NT commandments MUST be fulfilled.

We also know that it is the "law" that convicts:

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Romans 7:7-12 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

So upon coming to the Lord, the "law" is required to reveal the wretchedness of a person and their need to repent and receive the grace offered by the cross.

In verse 22 the Lord was not teaching here that if He had not come that men would not have been sinners.

From the time of Adam all men had become sinners,but their sin would not have been greatly that much as it is now. These men had seen the Son of God and heard His wonderful words . They could find no fault in Him and STILL THEY REJECTED HIM . That was what made their sin so great.

Compared with all other sins they had no EXUSE FOR THEIR SIN.

They rejected the Light of this world.
