Smeagol who was Gollum on "The Lord of the Rings" held the ring as "His Precious". Does he represent our love of possessions, material things, money and riches? Look how Smeagol started out in the movie.

I would say "obsession" is the apt descriptive where Smeagol is concerned.

But... but... precious? Preciousssss? The nasty hobbitses took my precious! Gollum!

If a lesson is to be drawn from this,  perhaps it can be the sure dangers of making one's entire life dependent on physical "riches". Notice that what was the evil was the spirit placed in the ring. Not the material.

BTW,  I enjoyed the Hobbit series.

The books are better than the movies in my opinion..   I did enjoy both very much though....    maybe time for a binge weekend.

The underlying Christian themes of Lord of the Rings are well known and that ground has been tilled thoroughly. Tolkien's conversion to Catholocism was well known.

Personally, I prefer C.S Lewis works, especially his "Out of the Silent Planet" trilogy.

I recommend that series if you like a bit more overt Christianity in your fantasy.

Wife and family, church family, and the precious sheaves...

"Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him"
Psalm 126:5-6

Do you recall the earlier version of the movie done in the 70's, I think. Titled "The Hobbit" i believe. It was done by filming the actors in live action scenes.  They were hopping up and down on stages and scaffolding and such. Then artists would trace them, frame by frame,  on a drawn in backdrop. I thought it pretty cool.

The truth is, I am at best an unfaithful servant. But His work, despite my selfish self-serving nature which He has smacked around sufficiently to where I hold onto pretty much everything with a loose grip.

The thing is when I examine all of this--it was truly despite any effort or lack thereof of my own. He has just done the work.

Its like standing back and seeing something from afar. Not being able to take any credit is a very liberating thing.

I only wish to love Him as I should and I am far from it.
