If it means anything at all whatsoever . . .

The only type of "life" anyone expects could possibly exist on the other planets or moons is bacterial (microscopic) life. The rational is that if bacteria can exist in toxic and anaerobic places on Earth, why not elsewhere?

Personally, I think the chances are very slim. It seems the more we have discovered so far, the more it looks like the other conditions required (other than liquid water) just aren't there. But that's just my opinion, really.

But even if so . . . I hardly find bacteria as a threat to the Scirptures!

I wasn't even being contentious at all in my last few posts. At least I don't think I was and didn't intend to be.

I was merely presenting one of the difficulties of detecting intelligent communication from another world.

The problem with these boards is you don't get facial expressions, vocal fluctuation nor body language to tell a person's tone. (Unless you insert emoticons to express your feelings.)

That part is relatively easy. If the signal doesn't come from a natural source yet shows some sort of pattern of regularity, the signal can be presumed to be intellegent. Understanding what it says isn't necessary to determining if it is intellegent.

How does one determine if the source is natural or not?

And, if the intellegence WANTS to be found, then they'll make the message easy to decipher, by using things like prime numbers, the weight of hydogen atom, etc. Things that would truly be known universally.

And supposing they don't use a base 10 system? Supposing they have no concept of mathematics whatsoever?

Just food for thought.
