I know many will still make mockery because of me and my situation once more. I have not post here for day because of the fear of people's reactions. Today I came across a song. It seems it is a very old song. It is my first time listening to it and please kindly permit me to share. It actually soften my heart and release me of some pain.

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
It's shame and reproach gladly bear
Then he'll call me some day to my home far away
Where his glory forever I'll share
And I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)
Till my trophies at last I lay down
And I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

Thank you plavious,

That was one of the very first hymns I learnt when I played the piano. The old hymns always wrote the great truths of God and His purpose through Christ.

I do like some of the more recent hymns and songs, but some have too much about `me.`

Come, brother Plavious. I will not mock, but I'll take the chance on people's reactions. I'll say this about the "Old rugged Cross". George Bennard, who wrote it, was probably a much better Christian than I am. I have no argument with him and it is a well loved song. But have you ever considered that our view should not be directed at the cross. Our focus should be the One Who hung on it! Should we "cherish" a cross? Will we exchange a cross for a crown? Or is the cross the way to our crown? Does not scripture say that we must "take up our OWN cross". Is my home "far away", or am I at Home in the father's House - the Church.

The song is an old favorite, but will it survive scrutiny?

Hi Ad Hoc,

I have often thought the same about the cross, when it is Christ on the cross who died for us.

I do notice that the song says `emblem of suffering and shame....` so, that partly helps but would have been better to say the Lord`s name.

The Roman catholic Church has Christ still of the cross in their buildings. The Reformed Churches have a cross without Christ. In one Christ has not risen, and in the other the wood is hallowed. May we be a People who display Christ by character, and not the symbol of what curses a man (Deit.21:23, Gal.3:13).

I too can see brother Bennard alluding to truths. But I think it was unfortunate that the cross became the focus of the song.

Hmm... "Brethren, I count not myself yet to have laid hold: but one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

"But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts".

But, God the Father chose the cross as the manner the Son would be our Sacrifice and He will bear the marks of that crucifixion for eternity. There can be no denying the cross. Man did not choose the cross. God did. Should I be honoured? No, but remembered as the way Jesus paid for man’s sin? Yes..especially MY sins. So, as the author of another song says,” I will glory in the cross.”. Some look at the cross as a hideous thing… no, Jesus agreed to bear my sins there..is it to be held in esteem rather than the One who willingly  paid with His life? Absolutely Not.
