Reminders Definitions - Evangelical

What is the definition of an evangelical? In common English, an evangelical is anyone who is zealous about advocating something. But in Christian terms, the word evangelical takes on a more profound meaning. Evangelical comes from the Greek word ‘evangelion’ meaning Gospel, or good news. Strong’s # 2098 A slightly different ending to ‘evangel’ makes it ‘evangelizo’ meaning, messenger of God that brings good news. Strong’s # 2097 From these two Greek words we get the English words, evangelical, evangelize, evangelist, preacher, and Gospel. With these foundations we now look to the Bible for answers to the following questions. What is an evangelical Christian? Are there Christians that are not evangelical? Is an evangelical the same as a fundamentalist? A Protestant? A conservative? And finally, are you an evangelical?

First, we must define the words Gospel and Christian. What is the Gospel? The Bible declares that the Word of God became human flesh, was called Emmanuel, or ‘God with us’ Matthew 1:23-25 and was named Jesus. He grew into adulthood and lived a perfect life by faith, fulfilling the law of Moses. God placed all the sin and sins of the world on Him and then He edied on the cross as payment for all of us. Romans 6:23 He was buried for 3 days and nights, proving His death and was then raised from the dead by God, alive forevermore. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 In a nutshell, the Gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The Bible also says that whosoever believes and obeys the Gospel, trusting in Jesus’ finished work on their behalf is a Christian. John 3:16 Next, A person who openly testifies of their salvation and proclaims this good news to others is an ‘evangelical Christian.’ Can a Christian be anything other than evangelical? Yes, but they are often only following a liturgical practice of religion rather than an active obedience to the command of Jesus to Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15; Romans 10:10-11; Acts 1:8 Being an evangelical Christian doesn’t make you fundamental, Protestant, or conservative, although evangelicals are often identified with one or more of these three. A fundamentalist is a Christian who believes in the inerrant, authoritative and literal interpretation of Scripture and of the foundational doctrines contained therein, such as the virgin birth and deity of Jesus. Protestantism is a term applied to those who associate with the 16th century reformation movement, which emphasizes salvation by grace through faith apart from works, and Biblical, rather than Roman papal authority. Conservatism emphasizes individual rights and freedoms, including religious practices, with minimal governmental intrusion.

Final Thoughts: Though we might personally classify and think of ourselves as being a certain type of Christian, it is best not to identify as such, other than calling ourselves ‘Christian.’ Once we begin to label each other beyond that, presumptions could prejudice both our own and other’s opinions and perhaps hinder what might be good Christian fellowship that is focused on Jesus. Rather than labeling ourselves by denominational or doctrinal affiliation, such as ‘Baptist,’ ‘pre-trib,’ ‘charismatic,’ or even ‘evangelical,’ it would be preferable to be recognized by our zeal and devotion to Jesus and what He is doing in our lives. Let us be an evangelical Christian but be known as a nut for Jesus.     ph

I believe what it says in the Bible.  Whatever the church has added is not the word of God.

What he said ...

I am a new creation in Christ.

Although I have been known to jokingly refer to myself as a born again puritan. (Salem witch trials aside, the puritans had a strict view of their relationsip with the Lord and living as a Christian.)

Hi, Being a "nut for Jesus" is a bit of a nonstarter for being an evangelical Christian going about sharing of the word of God with all that will listen. Being  "nutsy" for anything is a turn off, something that people block out.  Whereas  being rational, being sincerely interested in other people and what they are about builds trust. Then  one's own messages led by the Holy Spirit  and shared with those that are encountered may actually be heard, and even considered.

What am I? I am an atheist turned about by the Holy Spirit by way of a confrontation with an angel. How's that for nutsy? My practice of Christianity  is in modern terms akin to that which  John Piper shares, and also  John MacArthur.

I am Calvinist in understanding of the Bible, yet I have freedom of my will. I am "Puritan" in staying away from the wanderings of many a church body similarly as were/are the Puritans of England.

I can and do fellowship with those that believe in the cessation of gifts of the Spirit and those that believe all gifts of the Spirit including "tongues"to be in force today.

In short I am a Freewill-Calvinist; but you may call me brother and I will know your meaning as well as know you to be  brethren, whether sister or brother, in the Lord.

If the unbelieving world doesn't call us a "nut for Jesus" then perhaps we are looking too much like them?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
