There is a scriptural definition, provided by the Apostle John: "Sin is the transgression of the law."

So, sin is breaking the Law of God.

Which Law, exactly???

CarolineS

Sorry, I'm not going to put an interpretation on this; that would only be my opinion. I think the original poster wanted a 'scriptural answer,' and I think that is quite sufficient. DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!

And here we go again, folks, with the same ole song and dance! If you don't keep the Sabbath and the OT laws, you're on your way to Hell. Quit with the leading questions, Caroline, and speak what's on your mind. You have nothing better to do than to attempt to put Christians in bondage under the Law again, just as the Pharisees of old with their legalism. This topic was not about SDA doctrine, but about what is sin. If you wish to get into what sin is, I could say that placing the falsified teachings of Ellen G. White on the same pedastal as Holy Writ is nothing short of blasphemy, but I digress in hopes of not turning this thread off of it's original purpose.

Ok, this is the definition they always used to give us in Vacation Bible School as to what sin is:

Sin is anything you do, say, or think that does not please God

Amen with the quotes from the bible.

As to "what is the law", the Law is the commandments that God gave us through the bible. The Bible is God's Law and I think are over 400 different commands the last time I heard :) If I am wrong on this, I am sorry.

There is one thing, the bible says that by the law we are condemned but by grace we are saved. The bible says in Eph 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." We are never saved by being good, keeping the sabbath day, going to church, or anythign that we ourselves do. The only way to go to heaven is to call upon the name of the Lord, repent of your sins, and ask Jesus into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior. Also known as accepting the free gift that God has given us :24:

Sin is basically breaking the Law of God which is the bible :) Hope this helps :24:

OK. Let me see if I have this right.

<1John 3:4>

"Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness."

Or

"Whosoever committeth sin, transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."

transgress-1)"to break a law, rule, commandment, etc. 2) to break, sin against, or violate, as a law;"

(Scribner-Bantan English Dictionary)

Sin is breaking God's Moral Law. Last time I looked there were Ten Commandments written in stone by the finger of God.

(Not 400) Only Ten.

Romans 7:7 shows us what sin is, "I would not have known sin except through the law." If there is no law, there is no sin. Because the law defines what sin is. If there is no sin, the Gospel is destroyed. We need the law to tell us and show us what sin is. The law points us to Christ.

However, I realize we cannot discuss God's Law on this board. It seems to me the status quo around here is one of the following:

A) We are under grace, we are saved by grace; you don't need to keep the law anymore.

B) If you keep the Ten Commandment's you have to keep all the Torah (some 400 laws).

C) The law is for the Jews only.

D) The law is for Old Testament believers and we are New Testament believers._

E) All you have to do is call upon Jesus, believe in Him, and you are saved. You don't have to do anything at all.

If a person chooses do discuss God's Moral Law, the Ten Commandents, you are:

A) A legalist

B) A pharisee

C) A follower of Ellen G. White

D) A person who wants to put believers into a yoke of bondage

God's Law, the Ten Commandments, show us and tell us what sin is. How can sin be defined if not with the Law? What is so wrong with God's Law? I think His Laws are perfect. I keep them as best as I can because I love Jesus and I don't want to commit sin. I want them written in my mind and heart.

I will not continue this discussion because I have learned in the past the thread will be closed. But some people on this board need to study this issue more. God's Law will become a dividing issue in the last days, I believe this division has already started. Remember, Satan hates God's perfect law. He will do anything he can to cause people to break God's Law. The Book of Revelation tells us when Jesus returns only two groups of people exist on earth: those that keep His Commandments and those who don't. Make sure you are in the right group.

In Christ,

CarolineS

Hmmm.....

Lev 20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Surely you have put to death anyone that you may have known to commit this one, right?

Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Killed any homosexuals lately? This Law implies that you should.

Lev 20:27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

Cranked up any neighborhood fortune teller stonings in the past few weeks, have you?

Exo 22:20 He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

We could use you in the war on terror....

Exo 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Well, you get the idea.

It's already been given. I agree with several of these posts on the subject.

This brings up a question that's been bothering for some time:

Is Sin bad simply because God arbitrarily says it is, or is it bad for some other reason besides God saying it is.

did that make sense?

I guess that technically, sin is sin because God said so, for sin is labeled, or called as much, in His Word. Anything else would be of man, or of satan. Many specifics of sin are of man, but rooted in the Bible.

Examples: Stealing a cool pocket knife from someone may not be specifically addressed in the Bible, but stealing is. Committing adultery with a blonde, 24 year old, woman may not be mentioned in the Bible, but committing adultery is.

What ever the specifics are, much, if not all, of sin is of or from God's Word.

Now, much of what we have to deal with today is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, but the root of the sins are. Take internet porn, for instance. The internet porn business is not mentioned in the Bible, but the lust of the eyes is clearly mentioned as one of the three main causes of sin. Put the two together, and you merely have a modern version of the same old sin.

It's amazing to read what God has called sin and see how much is actually applicable to todays society.

God never simply says anything arbitrarily. If He said it, it has a direct meaning. The trouble is, we don't always understand clearly what it is He is saying.

Thank you, Jesus, for washing me!

Hope this helps.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
