Hold on...hold on. I must have missed something here. JW's and Mormons are cults, they are not Christian denominations. It is accepted that if you are a Christian and not Roman Catholic, then you are protestant, regardless of what denomination you belong to. Just look at any government survey forms. I think you're all a bit nit picky about this, or maybe I am over simplifying it.

"Now, there are anal-retentive types who would say that MY denomination is not Protestant, but the reality is, if you are a Christian, but not Roman Catholic, you are a Protestant, regardless of what affiliation you may have." Marnie

Balderdash!!

There is a church on earth today which precedes the Roman Catholics and can trace its line from Christ and the Apostles and has NOTHING to do with Roman Catholicism and its daughters. It is the Church of God which you read about in the New Testament. Acts tells its early history and the Epistles are actual letters of the Apostles to some of its congregations and leaders.

It is neither Roman Catholic nor Protestant.

Hey dude, re-read the question. It has to do with baptists...although they claim many things, the only baptist before the Reformation was John the Baptist. Balderdash..indeed! But, I love that word. It's my new favorite. Balderdash. I love writing it. Balderdash!

Anabaptists predate the Protestant Reformation.

I belong to a group of churches that are not Protestant as well.

Fascinating. I didn't know anabaptists were still around. What group of churches (other than RC) are not protestant? I am assuming it is a Christian denomination, right?

Protestants are generally the denominations that formed out of the Catholic church. In other words, Catholics (or former ones) protesting Catholics. The Baptist claim to trace their beliefs back to the anabaptists, who predate the reformation by hundreds of years.

Hey yall, as many of you know, I had to write a paper for Comparative Religions class on a denomination and chose to do it on Independant Fundamental Baptists. The Lord showed me a lot about baptists(my own religion) through this paper, there is something very interesting that I saw. I read in a book that we lent to me by a pastor at my church that baptists aren't protestants. It also seems that if I were to say that anyone, they get really upset with me. What's the deal?

Kittylover,

I was born and raised Baptist, but converted to Catholicism 5 years ago. I spent much time studying Church history before I converted. I can tell you that the first Church established after Jesus Christ walked on Earth, was the Catholic Church. Anyone who doesn't agree with this simply doesn't know Church history or has been mislead to give their specific denomination crediablity. Peter was the first Pope of the Catholic Church, we are talking about the Peter who walked with Jesus Christ. Specifically look up Mathew 16: 18-19. Every Christian in the world was considered Catholic, hence the word catholic, which means universal. So the Catholic Church was the universal Chrisitian Church. In 1054 A.D. there was the "Great Schism" between the east and west Catholic Church. The eastern churches didn't want to recognize the Pope as the official head of the Church. However they kept all seven of the Sacraments of the Church. To this day they still aren't in line with Rome because they fail to recognize the Holy See first founded by Peter and now filled by Pope Benedict.

The word Protestant didn't even come into existance to define a group of religious people until 1529 A.D.

Protestation of the Lutheran Princes and Cities against the decision of the Reichstag at Speier in 1529 gave the new religionists the name of "Protestants."

Martin Luther was the founder of the Protestant movement, but shortly after Luther broke off from the Catholic Church, John Calvin and others decided that they knew how to interpret the Bible better and splintering of Christendom began in full force. All Christian denominations other than Catholics are called Protestants. Simply because they protested the official teaching of the first Christian Church....which was the Catholic Church. This notion that Anabaptist or any other Denomination started before Catholicism is simply not true. All the early Chruch fathers from Augustine to Justin the Martyr etc were Catholic.

A very good source for you while doing this paper would be a book called. "Roots of the Reformation" by Karl Adams. You can find it very easy by doing a google search. It is a small paper back book of only 100 pages and cost $6.00. This would be very good for you to read. :D

You may also look up information about the Novatians, the Donatists, the Lollards, and the Albigenses. These are some of the roots.

No offense, but doesn't the Church of God date back to about the 1800s?

I think there is a Pentecostal group that has usurped the name.

But I am talking about the Church of God which was founded by Christ and ministered to by the Apostles and whose early history is recounted in Acts. My posting actually was clear on this point, wasn't it Kittylover? It's not a matter to be debated.

Kind regards,

Waimahia

One of the biggest things that some people, have a hard time with is that Baptists are not protestants. Baptists have a timeline that runs parallel to the Catholic Church.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
