Mount Moriah

Now, you scholars jump in here and correct my mistakes!! I certainly don't know much about this. Basically, Mount Moriah was first mentioned concerning Abraham and Isaac.

Gen 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

And it was there that God made a promise to Abraham

Gen 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah jireh: as it is said [to] this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Gen 22:15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

Gen 22:16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son]:

Gen 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which [is] upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

Gen 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Solomon's Temple was built there

2Ch 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where [the LORD] appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Now, the purchasing of this threshingfloor is a great and might story and one that I'm afraid I won't be able to tell very well. I will attempt but please know that there is a lot to this than meets the eye. I see more and more everytime I read this.

It began when David decided to take a census. There are various theories why God was displeased with David over this, but many agree that it was pride that prompted David. So, David took the census and then God sent a seer, Gad, to David giving him his choice of 3 kinds of punishments. David chose three days of pestilence to come upon the land. This is where we get the understanding that it's better to be in the hands of our Lord than at man's mercy.

Okay, look at this:

2Sa 24:16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

2Sa 24:17 And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

2Sa 24:18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

A threshingfloor was used to seperate the chaff from the grain. First, the stalks were laid out on the floor and grain was pulled or broked from the stalks by various methods. Either by dragging a board over it or beating it with sticks or even by walking over it. Then, they used pitchforks to toss broken stalks up into the air. The wind would blow away the chaff and the grain would fall back down into piles. This process went on until the grain was clean.

Another interesting aspect of this whole thing is that Araunah, the owner of the threshingfloor, offered to give it to David for free, but David said no, that he had to buy it at full price.

2Sa 24:24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy [it] of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

I think this is saying that a sacrifice to the Lord should be just that. hmmm?

There is a lot of symbolism here. I think God's word is amazing. :o

Does anyone have any insight in the above story?

Posted

my favorite obscure story is in numbers 36. zelophehad was a widower with five daughters. when he died, his daughters were left with no inheritance. those girls had a lot of spunk. at a time when women didn't dare talk about their "rights", they challenged tradition! they had to really... only men could inherit property, and their were no male siblings. their father's land was going to be divided up, leaving the girls with nothing to offer as a dowery. so they approached moses with their dilemma, and moses sought out God. the Lord commanded moses to let the girls inherit their land.

but that posed additional problems down the road. when the girls would marry, the land would become their husbands' property, and their father's inheritance would be taken from his descendants. this time it was the girls' uncles who approached moses.

again moses listened to the situation, then sought out God's will. the Lord then instructed moses that the girls must choose husbands from among their first cousins on their father's side, which they did.

the story really is the first 'equal rights' ammendment in the Bible. i think it's an awesome story.

Hi Trav,

I will look at this one tonight and if I see anything I'll share it tommorrow.

But I think you told the story pretty good.

Wilderness = husbands shortcut :unsure:

I dont see a problem here, we men know where we are going, and no need to ask directions either, we thrive on sight seeing :D

This is a great thread you have started I am enjoying the stories.

Thanks Kevin. I'm perplexed that the war took such a turn when the outcome looked like a done deal. And the whole thing with the king sacrificing his child on the walls of the gate - it that symbolic? Unusual story. It's interesting that that country to this day still uses that kind of irrigation system. (the trenches)

Anyway, I just thought it would be a good idea to share what we pick up when we read the bible. Different people are led to see different things. God's word is awesome.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
