I find it scary how far (?) we've come in a short 100 years!

YEAR OF 1903:

The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven (47).

Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000.

More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.

Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.

The five leading causes of death in the US were:

Depends on what you call a drug. Fire water was abused heavily.

Lets don't forget, electricity, tv, porn readily available, and video games. 100 years ago if you didn't work for the most part you didn't eat. That left everybody to tired to get into to much trouble. Today with all the creature comforts, AC, heat, running, potable and hot water, grocery stores and freezers, people have more leisure time to pursue the darker side of life. An idle mind is the devils playground. I think people have always been prone to this deprave behavour its just more readily available than it was 100 years ago, families and communities where more tight knit, less anonymity back then as compared to now. The list goes on and on.

The drug trade isn't new they where trading opium over a hundered years ago. But cocaine is new.

Cocaine is at least 53 years old that I know of. Coca Cola was making cokes with cocaine in the late 40's and 50's. I remember my mother was hooked on Coke and had to have at least one daily. They decided to take the cocaine out of the cokes and my mother went through a terrible withdrawal. This was before anyone knew that Coke contained cocaine. I believe they took the cocaine out of cokes in the early to mid 50's. I can tell you the cokes were so much better at that time and only cost either 5 or 7 cents I believe. It wasn't much anyway.
