Shalom,

I was listening to some classic Christian music (1970's) and this song played. WOW, it sure is appropriate for this discussion. It's also a really COOL song :b:

Why Should The devil Have All The Good Music

Written by: Larry Norman (1977)

I want the people to know

That He saved my soul

But I still like to listen to the radio

They say that rock and roll is wrong, we'll give you more chance

I say I feel so good I gotta get up and dance

I know what's right, I know what's wrong and I don't confuse it

Why should the devil have all the good music

I feel good every day

'Cause Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away

Well now they say to cut my hair

They're driving me insane

I grew it out long to make room for my brain

But sometimes people don't understand

What's a good boy doing in a rock and roll band

There's nothing wrong with playing blues licks

But if you got a reason tell me to my face

Why should the devil have all the good music

There's nothing wrong with what we play

'Cause Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away

Roll 'em away now!

I ain't knocking the hymns

Just give me a song that has a beat

No I ain't knocking the hymns

Give me a song that moves my feet

Jesus told the Truth

Jesus showed the Way

There's one more thing I'd like to say

They nailed Him to a cross

And they laid Him in the ground

But they shoulda known they can't keep a Good Man down

And I feel good every day

I refuse to lose it

All I wanna I know from all of you is

Why should the devil have all the good music

'Cos I been filled I feel okay because Jesus is the Rock and He rolled all my blues

Jesus is the Rock and He rolled all my blues

Jesus is the Rock and He rolled all my blues

The small corners album by Cliff Richard is BRILLIANT. It was one of my first ever Christian albums. Lots of good stuff on there.....

Nice one Vickilynn!!! I haven't heard that song in years. That is one bad thing about the Christian music industry. Secular music pays homage to the greats of the past by re-re-re-releasing the classics. Most Christian musicians, no matter how great, are forgotten and not really looked on as much. Just fade away.

Shalom Stephen,

Oh sorry!! I wasn't posting about Cliff Richard who covered the song in 1978, but rather Larry Norman who wrote the song.

Shalom Axxman,

Amen, what a great song, eh?

And there is such a deep sermon in the words. Judgment, criticism and rejection based on personal preferences rather than Scriptural basis.

I agree about the originals too. Larry Norman is one the pioneers of Christian music and most of his music has been covered many times, but we hear little of his original music.

If you hear a catchy beat, you want to listen to the song. Right? Sure, you have a choice, but Satan is out to get you to make the wrong choice, same as he does with every temptation. You become what you behold.

Like I said, I speak from experience. I firmly believe the wrong music can be as addicting as a drug. When I got rid of rock and started listening to Christian music, I could tell a big difference. It is edifying, makes you think about God. What does today's music make you think of? What does it talk about?

Shalom Kat,

Just so you know, I speak from experience as well. :whistling:

I do not believe a beat can lure anyone into listening to what they choose not to.

Music in itself is pure, created by G-d. Man perverts it, but the music is not evil.

I agree that Christian lyrics are much more edifying than secular lyrics.

The lyrics are the issue, not the beat. That is my point.

You said the beat can lure us and I speak from my own experience in saying that is not the case.

This IS interesting because we have 2 people who say both are talking from experience and both have different experiences with a "beat" to a song. So live and let live and everyone can LEARN frome each others EXPERIENCES and yes they WILL be DIFFRENT, because we are all individuals, that's how God made us.

No one is wrong...it's all experiencing one thing and having a DIFFERENT EFFECT.

Axx, I don't think love of flesh/the world is the same as one who does not believe in God. There's also a difference between not believing in God and not believing in Jesus as God, so the interpretation gets a little foggy there too.

Anyway, nothing will ever damage my great love for the Beatles! ;-)

I have hated the Beatles ever since I heard them say they were bigger than Jesus.

But that's just me.

Okay...I realize this is an old topic, but I really wanna add my two-cents.

First... Nobody who claims to serve Christ should be purchasing music made by persons who are unbelievers. It is like sleeping with the enemy. You are financially supporting a person who writes music from a worldly perspective. Even if the lyrics are not "evil" they are still at odds with God. I encourage people to buy Christian music whenever they are tempted to buy secular music. We should be supporting our musical brothers and sisters in Christ. It is absolutely sickening to me that the "High School Musical" soundtrack sold more copies than the Top 8 Christian albums. It should be noted that the christian sales were boosted by Alan Jackson who put out a country hyms album this year...that album outsold "real" Christian artists by double. It is sad, at best, that so many Christians love music and insist on spending their money on worldly music. Even on this website, Christians have consistently talked about their fave secualr bands.

So, do you know each and every person individually that you buy their music? How do you KNOW they are believers?

During the 60's and 70's, the major Southern gospel bands like the Goodmans and Singing Rambos used the same studios and same professional musicians as did the secular artists of the time. I bet you not all of those musicians were Christians, so maybe I should be trading in my classic LP's, eh? (Smiles is rubbing off on me again, I'm saying "eh!" )

Alan Jackson? Do you know his heart? You've certainly judged him as not being a "real" Christian artist. I bought his CD and absolutely loved it; I've also bought CD's by Randy Travis and a host of other secular artists. Simply because someone sings secular music doesn't make them evil, ya know! Even the beloved Chuck Wagon Gang started out singing secular songs w/ just a few gospel ones mixed in. When they found that the gospel ones were going over better, they switched over to all gospel. Other country artists such as Tennessee Ernie Ford and Jimmie Davis have found new life in their careers by switching to all gospel.

Second... In regards to the website that started this topic. We shouldn't need a website to tell us that worldly musicians (of any genre) are un-godly.

Did you know that Hank Williams, Sr., a man I'm sure you'd term as ungodly, wrote and recorded gospel songs that are still considered standards in the field of Southern Gospel music today? When I listen to the words of "I Saw The Light" I just know that those words COULD NOT have came from an unrepentant sinner! Did Hank live a perfect life? Far from it! However, for all of the wrong things in his life, I still believe God used him to write that song. The same case could be made for a lot of other secular artists; Tom T. Hall had a huge hit with "Me and Jesus" as did Merle Haggard with "Jesus, Take A Hold." Roy Acuff brought "Great Speckled Bird" to national attention and Ferlin Husky did the same with "Wings of a Dove."

To the people who believe in "Christian only" music. Do you also stay away from non Christian literature? Better not pick up the daily newspaper, you might become part of the wallowing cesspool. Better not watch Jeopardy on TV, it is satan's spawn.

Give me a break.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
