Is it Ok to read magazines?

I personally don't think theres anything wrong with reading celeb-gossip magazines as long as it's not running your life- ya know? It's not healthy to do anything in excess, but as long as this is just something you enjoy from time to time as a form of easy entertainment I do not see the harm in it. However if it has become something of an obsession you may be battling with the first commandment...idolizing the lives of these celebrities and completely losing your focus on what's really important- Jesus

You are not in the know when you read those scandal sheets as the stories are lies and fabrications. You are not a celebrity worshipper are you?

I also think that you only feel "left out" of gossip and such when you are concerned about it.

eg: I have been living in France for 3 years now. I only read French news and watch French TV. When I have the misfortune to come across a UK paper with the latest gossip on British & Hollywood stars I'm so out of touch it no longer matters.

These people only seem to have first names. the headlines say "Trish is having Steve's Love Child" I think "Who the heck is Trish? Singer? Actress? TV presenter? and then I think "Who cares?" and flip to the sports pages.

Because sports isn't trivial.

There should be little room for doubt here. The very fact that you question it should be a red flag. Jesus DIED and SUFFERED that our actions would glorify Him. Death to self is the way down here. Jesus said we are to follow HIm. Somehow I do not think anyone can peruse those magazines and then turn and worship the LORD of Purity and Glory. In another thread you doubted the existence of any truly good Christians. I was amazed at the people who agreed with you. But Yes. There are many Christians who set their actions to be a honor to God and a witness to all who are in view. If something does not honor God leave it off. We are walking an eternal path down here. This life is a school house for that which is to come. It is well worth saying no to a few temptations that would feed our flesh.

I subscribe to Men's Fitness. I like to take care of my physical just as I like to exercise my spiritual. Each month there are articles, ideas and pointers about diet, weight-lifting, cardio and style. I don't make it my Bible, which I believe is very important. I don't live by "it's" standards. I use it for pointers on a healither way of living. If you were a mechanic and subscribed to "Car World" or "Hot Rods" there would'nt be a problem because they have awesome articles about automobiles and better mechanics. If you were a hunter or fishermen, and you subscribed to to "Bass" or "Hunter" there would'nt be a problem because they have articles on hunting and fishing. The problem with Celeb. Magazines is that it's all gossip. The Lord frowns on gossip..

What a valid point. The Word of God is full of warnings against gossip. Gossip is a tool of the flesh and Satan. And surely you are right. God frowns upon it. So who are we to serve?

Quite simply gossiping is dishonouring to God. These so called celebrity stories are just that, stories with no truth in them. Sometimes the celebrity manipulates the media to get their names in papers and magazines with some staged stunt, I remember watching a documentary about one celebrity who was fed up with press stalking her, so she had a bit of fun with them by getting one of her male friends to be her boyfriend for the week and watch the media fall over themselves trying to get the exclusive shot and writing up complete drivel and nonsense about the couple.

What gives the media the right to rake over peoples lives the way they do? Did you know that a number of privacy laws have been passed solely to prevent reporters from spying on celebrities. How would you like every minor detail of your life published in magazines and when nothing interesting or conclusive is found a huge amount of lies are simply written about you. How would you like to be

PLEASE don't let my words offend you - but just what do you 'know' after reading about who is sleeping with who, or who is having who's baby, or who likes or dislikes the president?

It is interesting what passes for knowledge these days.
