When we think of Love in Christian terms, we tend to think of the "do good" , "fuzzy feeling" love.

If you read Mark 10 v 21

Where Jesus is talking to the rich, young ruler, the Bible tells us that Jesus, looking at the young ruler, LOVED him and then Jesus proceeds to deliver the Truth of being a Follower of His....for the young, ruler to give what he owns to the poor etc. Jesus was blunt and didn't mince words..tough love, Jesus style: )

So..included in the Love God wants us to show, is the love for one another- which INCLUDES sraight, forthright speech, which in some cases can wound...but nonetheless it is requied.

Tough love.

Dear Brother "Observer of dreams"

What I found in The Book thanks to your question Dear Brother!

The radical, the root of the Golden Rule is, I think, Pure Love.

This is The Love of God, The Father and God, The Son and God, The Holy Ghost as declared.....

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

and.....

"And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." (1 John 4:16)

Not only does this author miss the mark when she mocks God's Law but she is actually dancing with her love, dancing with death!

"But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death." (Proverbs 8:36)

I observe this rule is most often treated by the world either as a joke or as a weapon to be used to control others. God's Law (Golden Rule) is even used today in a tyrannical attempt to mute the Gospel i.e., "Don't tell anybody about Jesus, I don't want my neighbors treated like that, you have no right to share that, I will sue if you don't shut-up (but God Rules!)"

This darling of Academe appears to set her case for, possibly, this propose.

Maybe she just slipped it in hoping the student would miss the poison pill part and maybe your Professor brought it up hoping a student would see it for what it really is and challenge it!

Good teachers have been known to do such things don't you know!

Print this and ask him!

His reply might surprise us all!

Why we Love.....

"We love him, because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me." (John 15:4)

"If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love." (John 15:10)

Copy-Cat I know

But I do try to copy from the best!

I just wanted to see these two teachings together.

Too Cool!

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets." (Matthew 7:12)

"And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:"

"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment."

"And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:29-31)

Love, Joe

PS: For some strange reason, these foundational Truths (Bible Scriptures) are almost never published in today's "scholarly" thesis!

"Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." (Matthew 15:14)

Bonus addendum.....

God's Book of Love on Love.....

(1 Corinthians 13)

[1] Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

[2] And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

[3] And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

[4] Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

[5] Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

[6] Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

[7] Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

[8] Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

[9] For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

[10] But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

[11] When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

[12] For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

[13] And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

(I have a long, long way to go but Jesus is working on me!)

Philosophical Perspective versus The Gospel of Jesus Christ!

These things aren't inherently opposed. Did you mean on this issue here?

Many of your posts at Worthy appear to me to be the thoughts of a College student who is totally immersed in the study of some subject he loves!

What is wrong with that?

"And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit."

"For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow." (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18)

What are you implying with this verse?

The thoughts of a College student who applies his studies to every thought and action he can.

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Although an excellent way to a sold understanding of the doctrines of men and of demons.....

and although a sure-fire way to an A+.....

and although great ground work is laid toward a possible PhD.....

This practice Is Not The Way To Jesus Christ!

So we aren't supposed to love God with our minds?

"But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God."

"Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men." (1 Corinthians 24:25)

Are you suggesting Christians are to be stupid, ignorant and foolish?

That last reply was pretty rude. He has the bible memorized and went to seminary. I already pointed out that he was just doing his job.

He gave us the "flawed rule" argument knowing it could be disproved. He doesn't even agree with it himself. You need to soften your heart to ignorance and learn better communication skills, and next time please read the replies to the topic before you make such a rude comment next time tanx :whistling: --Jason

Good questions!

Dear Brother, anytime you see Joe post anything that dishonors or may dishonor The Lord Jesus, please correct!

As you know, all the good stuff comes from Jesus!

All the other stuff is Joe's and must be safely discarded with the other toxic waste!

I was sharing with our Brother Jason, a little of "The Word" hid in my heart that kept me from falling totally away from God!

God gifted me in the late 1940's with a KJV Bible and with a home and with Churches that took it seriously!

I learned to read from This Bible.

I came to Jesus when I was six.

When I was a young adult, I walked in the world and studied both on my own and, after The USN, at College.

No matter what philosophy or theory I was attempting to follow, the Word of God hid in my heart continued to shine The Light of God upon them!

Needless to say, I got no real satisfaction from any earthy knowledge.

God is so Merciful and Gracious to His kids!

Jesus Is Faithful!

Love, Joe

PS: Jason, I think your Professor is, maybe a real sharp Believer and a sneaky teacher! Some of the best are sneaky, don't you know! :b::blink::thumbsup:

Nothing that Jesus has ever said is flawed. Your professor is flawed.

My ethics professor introduced an argument that the golden rule is flawed. His reasoning is that quote, "Others don't always want to be treated as you want to be treated."

The question is therefore how can one live their life by the golden rule if the golden rule cannot always apply? I have already refuted this in my head but I want to see if someone else can reach the same, or a similar conclusion. :whistling:

The golden rule, Well, lets aply it to the real golden rule, Love your neighbor as yourself, Basicly, what treat others as you would like to be treated, is a reflection of love your neighbor as yourself, it's not a matter, and Jesus never said that they will treat you how you want to be treated, no he pretty much said the world is going to hate you reguardless, because you are not of this world. The reason thats the golden rule, is because it's loving others, as we love ourselves, if we are hungery, ya we get some food and grub down, if we are thirsty, we ourselves get a drink, well the humbleness that comes from this is important, when our enemy is thirsty, give him a drink, treat others how you want to be treated, is a reflection of loving your neighbor as yourself. So I don't see how the argument is flawed. Now, the only way it is flawed is if your treating others the way you want to be treated to get somthing back. look at 1st corinthians 13, it says love doesn't seek it's own, so therefore, to love others as ourselves, and treat others how we would like to be treated, is not about seeking our own, it's not about seeking to be treated in the same matter, but it is about a foundation in the heart, and showing your heart as a witness to the person that Christ is working in your life.

Treat other as you want to be treated?

This is the law and the prophets (Mat 7:12).  At grace's age, we ought to treat other as Jesus want to treat them.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
