As a Christian we are all given the Holy Spirit. The fruits of the spirits are love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. As we allow the Holy Spirit to dominate our live we should see these fruits flourish.Right? :whistling:

So how come these traits are often seen in non-Christian people?

Grace to you,

I would reply with a question.

To what end do you see these traits or charecteristics of God?

Peace,

Dave

I'll give you an example,

We have some Hindu neighbours. They often seen helping others. They give away things to help others. They live a good moral life, same as any good Christian. Externally I would not see any difference between them and a Christian family. Obviously I don't know what they are like internally though.

They are counterfeit and not the genuine gifts.

The love that is spoken of as a gift is the love that God gives. We love because He FIRST loved us.

Joy is not the same as happiness which the world seeks after.

Peace is the peace with God. The natural man is at enmity with God. The world seeks after tranquility/the absence of turmoil.

Patience is good but longsuffering(KJV) is just that - suffering long, the world is seeking to be tolerant.

The world confuses politeness and morals with the biblical goodness/gentleness, and kindness/goodness(KJV).

Faithfulness/faith is counterfeited by self suficiency and good works.

False humility is the worlds meekness.

And self constraint/control(because it is originating with SELF) is the way the world gives the appearance of temperance, or God given victory over sin.

I was listening to a sermon that explained the fruits of the Spirit well, and he showed how to be genuine gifts they have to be all existent at once. You could not have peace without humility, or meekness without patience, or joy without .....etc.

As larry says they are counterfeit and don't show the true nature of the heart.

Even unbelievers are capable of civil righteousness and good works. In fact I know unbelievers who are as nice and as caring as any Christians I know. Christians aren't really good people in God's eyes. just forgiven for the sake of Christ. When we start self-acknowledging the fruits of the Spirit in ourselves or start thinking that we ourselves are good moral people because we are believers then we are moving away from faith and repentance and ultimately the truth about ourselves.

Hindu's believe they will obtain a place in heaven by works...so yes, they will go through the steps to assure this...it is a counterfit religion...JESUS is the real deal. :) You will find that a lot of religions believe that works will get them to heaven.

Christians are saved by grace, and you will know them by thier love.

I see this as well with my mormon neighbors. They are morally good people. They believe that their good works will give them a place in heaven too. There are many law abiding citizens that will not be entering the pearly gates as their heart is not right with God. Unless they turn to Jesus and repent their sins, as good as they are, they will not get into heaven. :)

As Christians we need to let the Lord work through us, as good works done by our own effort are nothing. When the Lord looks at us He looks at the person we have become in Him, His new creation.

Thanks for your answers. I'm starting to understand where I mixed up.
