Runningator, I am not saying you have to speak in tongues to be a Christian,

[i was a Chritsian five months before I was baptised in the Holy Ghost and spoke with tongues].

A person is a Christian when they get born again of the Spirit of God, But then there is a different experience called the Baptism in the Holy Ghost with speaking in tongues.

I use the word "Baptism in the Holy Ghost because John the baptist does, Matthew 3: 11. and Jesus does, acts 1: 5.

I was a born again believer for 37 years before I submitted to the Holy Spirit enough to receive the gift of prayer language. I had been asking for it, but before I came to the point of asking for it, I was afraid of it due to an experience where a group of Christians outside of my church group, in a home prayer meeting, tried to force me to speak in tongues. I had expressed that I had a one-time experience in speaking in tongues when I was about 20, and wanted it again.

However, now I have come to the understanding about it and its use in the Body of Christ and it is a joy to be able to speak to God through the submission of my mind and my voice to Him for His pleasure and His glory. Perfect love casts out fear, and fear is the opposite to faith.

I really agree that this is a touchy subject. Personally, if someone is talking gibberish, it is pointless---what purpose does it serve? Unbelievers will think it's crazy or weird, and believers will have nothing to gain from it. I personally am turned off by any church that engages in "tongues" that are gibberish sounds, and I would never return to a church should this activity occur.

There is a proper order which has to be followed. To deny that the Holy Spirit gives gifts is denying His words.

The Gifts:

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The Order:

1 Corinthians 14

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say

Maybe Im fearful. :) And I don't think I know how to be very submissive...this is a new vocabulary word for me but I'm trying hard to work on it.

I think that fear is a common thing. I was pretty spooked at the idea, having had demonic activity in my life previously, from which I was delivered. But I listened to teachers and leaders I trusted and learned more about the Word of God and more about how the Holy Spirit moves in us, and in spite of not being exposed to it in any great measure, because the denomination I was in then did not deny the gift, but did not encourage it either, I began to seek the gift.

After a few experiences where I openly asked God for the gift of tongues, yet did not receive it, one afternoon, I began to worship Jesus Christ, submitted my voice and it suddenly switched from English to another language! It was a blessed event!

God bless you as you work through this area where God wants to increase you.

i agree with onelight and many of the chatters that have given scripture on tongues.... i myself was not sure of speaking in tongues .. i didnt want anything that wasnt of God... i prayed and asked the Lord for the gift if it was of him... and i dont feel anyone that speaks in tongues are more special in Gods eyes or mans... i myself only speak in tongues when i am in deep prayer ... not for everyone to hear or show... i will be praying and sometimes i feel the utterance of tongues come on me... or from with in me... I dont feel a need to go around saying i speak in tongues or God gave me this or that... i pray and asked the Lord to show me in his Word and lead me by his Spirit as to what he wants me to do... and i try and do that... i also know this topic can cause many christians to become upset with each other and i for one prefer not to argue the point when we seem to get no where... and because this has nothing to do with someones salvation i dont feel a need to debate it all the time... i much rather be of one mind and one accord on things of God....i am thankful for all the Lord gives me and teaches me.. and uses me for his glory...

as in acts..8:5-17 when philip came to the city of samaria and preached Christ to them... they were baptized in the name of Jesus and saved... they had recieved the Word of God... then after peter and John went to samaria and prayed that they might recieve the Holy Ghost... the samaritans obviously were saved before the visit of peter and john... peter who ought to know... defined salvation in First peter 1:23 as being born again not of courruptible seed but of incorruptible by the Word of God which liveth and abideth forever.... we seen in verse 12 that the samaritans had believed and had been baptized in water .. in verse 14 we saw that they had received the Word of God .... Peter and John didnt pray for the samaritans to get saved.... they already were saved... the apostles prayed that they might recieve the Holy Spirit...... and peter and john didnt pray that God would give the samaritans the Holy Spirit... they prayed that they might recieve the Holy Ghost.... then they laid thier hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost....they prayed for them that they might receive....

God bless you all sister vicki

I keep readin "tongues are for everyone who's been baptised by the Holy Spirit" which actually boils down to "If you are a REAL believer, you'll speak in tongues" Same conversation in every thread like this, those that believe in tongues lookin down and feeling pity for those that don't and basically doubting their salvation irregardless of how you try to dress it up.

That is not true, I believe that all christians can receive the ability to pray in tongues through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but I do not look down on anyone that has not been baptized in the Holy Spirit or spoken in tongues nor do I question their salvation.

And YET, the Bible says not everybody receives the same gift..............................same old same old..........this is one of the reasons I don't come here very much any more. I'm not saying your NOT a christian if you don't speak in tongues...........BUT

I too have experienced a kind of condescension from charismatics on this subject, which is why I usually don't participate in them much. Actually on one occasion a charismatic told me that I lacked faith because i didn't speak in tongues.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
