The title of "Rabbi" is an earned academic title.

First thanks for an interesting post. It got me thinking and searching. I can't confirm that "Rabbi" is an academic title in the 1st century. Can you source it?

Every article I find casts doubt on that:

How about Mat 9:20? The word hem could be translated as "tassel." If Jesus wore the traditional blue (?) robe with the tassels that would seem to support your viewpoint.

Interesting in any case!

Do you know of any great books or websites on the culture of 1st century Jews for us gentiles?

I really hope this is NOT said in a mocking tone, as Shiloh has shared quite a lot of his knowledge to us here over the years.

First of all, let's use a little common sense. Rabbis in the first century had three basic responsibilities:

1. Teacher of the Law in the Beit Hamidrash (house of study).

2. Legislate laws and traditions for the community.

3. Judiciate on a Bet Din (house of judgment) and resolve legal disputes between multiple parties.

Rabbis were not pastors or preachers. They served a different role in the 1st century than they do today, generally speaking. During the first century, synagogues were not like churches. They were not places of worship, but places of study. Worship was done everyday at the temple.

Everything the Rabbi did, all of his responsibilities were "academic" in nature. These were not responsibilities that could be assigned to just anyone. I think it goes without saying that these responsibilities would have to be handled by those who can demonstrate that they have the training, and expertise in such fields of endeavor. How would you gain the training and qualifications needed for academically based vocations if not in school?

Rabbis, all Rabbis had disciples. Rabbi Akiva was purported to have had 24,000 disciples at one time. Hillel, Israel's greatest sage and the head of the Sanhedrin also had his own academy and there is reason to believe that one of His students (discples) was Gamaliel, who was the teacher of Paul.

In ancient times, Rabbis had secular vocations in addition to being Rabbis, Hillel was a wood cutter, Shammai was a builder, other ancient Rabbis were blacksmiths, wine tasters, water carriers, tailors, butchers, and general retail merchants. Paul was a tent maker, Jesus was carpenter, etc. Jesus was in every way consistent with the other Rabbis of His day.

I don't see where they cast doubt on what I have said. I don't even see where they address the issue directly at all.

How about Mat 9:20? The word hem could be translated as "tassel." If Jesus wore the traditional blue (?) robe with the tassels that would seem to support your viewpoint.
Not really. All of the children of Israel were expected to wear those tassels. That was reserved only for Rabbis.

So, I am wondering, how many Orthodox, believing Christians believe that JESUS was part of an organized religion that gave HIM authority to preach in the temple?

:(

This is fascinating, Shiloh. :whistling:

Can you handle all of the questions? ;) Maybe you could tell us where you learned it, and we could learn it too. :24:

The truth is that the Pharisees comprised of nine orders and tens of thousands in number were the largest religious sect in 1st century Israel and the only one to survive the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. In fact, modern Judaism is what Pharisaism turned into after the destruction of the Temple.

What do you mean by nine orders? Did they all agree 100% with the teachings of the Bible? Were they just in different areas, or were they nine different ones because there were things they could not agree on?

Christians really, really need to be more in touch with the historical context of Scripture.

Nope. I come here to learn. I am looking for a book that teaches on the 1st century Jewish customs and culture. What little I have learned so far really does make the NT come alive. The Biblical writers did not add much background information.

Actually, I have a ton of questions for Shiloh and appreciate his knowledge. However I verify nearly everything that could change my Christian Worldview. We can't adopt every doctrine and belief we read on the internet!

Sure.

I'll have to get the name of this book that my bro in-law reads along side the Bible. It's about the Israelites and the times, customs, Culture etc and it really brings the Bible to life.

Absolutely brother. We much carefully study and guard what goes into our hearts and minds.

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

I do think we should know the culture and the background in order to have a deeper understanding. It doesnt' take away from the gospel if we don't know these things, for the Lord presents us with the truth in simplicity. However, there are so many deeper understandings and it's pure joy to search them out!

I have dear friends on this site that present many things, some of which are unfamiliar to me as I have not studied those particular areas. Even so, I do not take them at their word, but becasue of my trust in them, I consider these things. In the end, it is we who are responsible for our own knowledge, as encouraged and guided by the Holy Spirit.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
