Peter says ' My brother...' this could be literally his brother or another Christian. Before formulating any ideas about how to respond one has first to understand what is involved with forgiveness. Primarily is the need for repentance. Look at how the sin offering was made in the of. Look at how we gain salvation and think, do we have copy God or like pharisees add to what God has done. Luke17:3 makes it clear there has to be repentance before there is forgiveness. When there isn't, then like Jesus on the cross we had the situation over to God to deal with us and with the offender. We also pray for them. How do we deal with this in our relationship with Jesus? By being humble enough to recognise we are sinners who constantly offend and constantly need his forgiveness.

If you are willing to engage in this difficult field you need to be aware of tactics both there's and yours. As you have said atheists will fire nonstop questions at you no matter how you answer them. Don't play this game. If you have answered there first objection, do not answer any other questions but remind them of their question and of your answer asking them do they understand your answer? Put them on the defensive challenge them to show where your answer is incorrect and also ask do they accept your answer, on their confirmation you will deal with another question from them.

We rarely look at what Jesus did for us, partly because it is so well known and largely because we do not think. Jesus gave up the worship of Angels, the Glory and Majesty of his position beside God the Father in heaven. He limited his power, no longer Omni present, he limited his knowledge, he limited his power to that which his Father wanted him to do. Then he became a baby, learnt to walk, talk etc etc as a man he taught us and was rejected by all but a few people. He was subject to the attacks by the devil himself and knew hunger, tiredness , the pain of loss as well as the joys of friendship. Finally he was physically beaten and crucified. Suffering not just the physical pain, but the spiritual pain of bearing our sins. The perfectly pure and Rightous Son of God became Sin and was rejected by God the Father. He rose triumphantly as a sign that he had accomplished all he set out to do. Why should anyone belief in. God so weak that his creatures can kill him? He came from where? He was defended from who? He was what a manual worker? In the Roman world where one came from, who one's ancestors where and what one did, indicated the worth one had. To come from an unknown district in a rebellious province from no known family and to be a manual worker would show that one was nobody. That anyone is a Christian shows it is solely a work of God grace.

Was Matthew written by... Matthew?
Who me replied to LearningToLetGo's topic in Do you want to just ask a question?
Context is everything and the context is that of the authorship of the gospels. As far as I am aware they confirm that the transitional authorship of these books is correct. -
Was Matthew written by... Matthew?

C.s. Lewes wrote about literary critics, about how he'd written a book of essays and they had commented on them. What he had found was that critics who had grown up and been educated in the same environment as him would be completely wrong in there assessments of why he had written an essay. How accurate do you think critics will be of writers and there writing when they are products of alien culture. Why did I write this to demonstrate of an Oxford educated critic cannot determine why an Oxford educated writer wrote how can they comments on why a writer from ancient gulf or Israel wrote. We ca trust the opinions of the early church fathers because there is a chain from the authors through other leaders to them, all confirming the same thing. The gospels were written by those they are attributed to. -
Paul wrote about himself as an evangelist not burdening new believers with the cost of supporting him. It was how he viewed his service to them. The other passage is aimed at how we view one another. As always the contex rather than pulling verses out of contex is vital.

You read it, listen to expository sermons ( where the preacher takes a passage and looks at what that passage means to the writer, his listens, to readers down the centuries, what it means to us today and then applies it practically to us today.) Challenge your minister he should be doing this regularly, if he isn't move. Read commentaries and apologetic web sites and read books on theology. Thinks soaking a semi perminable brick in water, it takes a long time for the water to penetrate it, it's the same with us.

This is what is important, these petty unimportant issues! Have you understood what Jesus and Paul taught about the safety and about holy days? Jesus said we are to worship in Spirit and in Truth, that the Safety was made for man's benefit. The issue is whether one is regularly meeting with other Christians to worship, to encourage and be encouraged as well as to be challenged. How and when one does that is up to you. He ignorant immature Christian says galvanism or armenimsm, or any other doctrine is false. Yet where do these doctrines deny the gospel? They talk about how one is saved and about one's relationship to God. Yes one can reinvent the wheel or one can use what already exists and yes one should check it out with the bible,. As you rightly say we are not all alike, some want to dig deep into scripture, others have a greater or lesser biblical knowledge. The role of those who have great spiritual and biblical knowledge is two fold. To check on what is being preached and challenge the preacher. To encourage the spiritually immature to grow.

Is Baptism symbolic?
Who me replied to Dead Orthodoxy's topic in Do you want to just ask a question?
Paul spoke of us as having died and hurried with Christ when talking about baptism. Jesus referred to Noah's flood as being a baptism. When you were baptised did you literally die and get hurried? Is getting wet really all that is needed to make someone aChristian? -
Read church history, read about the heresy that were taught in the early years of the church, how these same heresies are still taught today by self proclaimed spiritual teachers. You shingle about Bible colleges and yes one needs to be selective, there is a purposes in having them. It prevents one from having to reinvent the wheel. All Christians, not just those gong to Bible college , are to test what they are taught, those who are spiritually mature are to nurture and encourage those still drinking spiritual milk. We are not to be isolated, ivory tower hermits but members of an interactive, noisy family.
-
Sorry to read about your beliefs. That there are no Christians around today. Were you are mistaken is that Jesus said that he'll cannot prevail against his church. Yes there will be those teaching falsehood, and those teaching partial truths, but there will also be those who do know and trust Jesus as their saviour.
-
Yes and no. Why seek to reinvent the wheel? Yes there are those who say unless you cross every T and dot every I you are not a Christian. There are those who do not seek spiritual meat, but are content to suck spiritual milk. But they are Christian. It is not our task to pick and choose who we think are or are not Christian or to judge there level of maturity. Those who are spiritually mature are to nurture and encourage those who are weaker in the faith. This is not done through forums but in one to one meeting either at church, coffee shops or at home.

To be a missionary in an other country one must first be a missionary in one's own country. There is no point traveling to another country seeking to tell people about Jesus if one is not already doing it in one's own country. A second requirement is that one is active in your church. If one is not a Sunday school teacher or a youth leader etc etc in your church, what use are you going to be when asked to start leading Bible studies, organise a youth club etc etc. Third and most vital is the need for a sense of mission. Most missionary organisations require potential missionaries to have undergone theological and cross cultural training. This is to ensure one knows what one is talking about and that one can spiritually feed oneself as well as to prepare for the shock of living in an alien culture. To sum up,if your church would miss you, your a good candidate, if they are asking who? Don't even think about it.

my lifes terrible
Who me replied to faithfull-prophet4040's topic in Do you want to just ask a question?
I am sorry that you are finding life difficult. Smoking and drinking coffee are not sinful acts. Your health will be better if you do not smoke. Coffee, so long as you are not drinking a page mug full every hour all day it will not harm you. You should talk to your doctor about your depression and get involved in your church, where you can met people and make friends. -
Guilty as charged.

So despite the fact that the apostles spent three years being taught and trained by Jesus, that Judas's replacement also had to be someone who had spent time with Jesus you believe that a minister needs no training. Historically untrained, immature Christians have been responsible for teaching false ideas about Christianity. As for the sinners prayer, do you believe that God is limited to only the literal use of words and phrases found only in scripture?
-
Yet 1 John constantly uses ' we ' it does not distinguish between saved and unsaved, it is only those who would split hairs to prove umbilical ideas who do this. Both Paul and John wrote letters addressing Christians.
-
So we All have a sinful nature.
-
God's forgiveness is dependent on our repentance. The repeated insistance on forgiveness is due to even when there is repentance our unwillingness to let go of our feeling of being The victim.
-
John Ch 6 verses 28+29. What must we do to do the work/Will of God? Jesus answered. To do the work/Will of God is to believe in the one he sent. If you believe that Jesus s your saviour then you need to do what Jesus wants you to do and that at it's simplist is to follow he ten commandments.
-
As salvation is dependant on being a follower of Jesus, being a new is really a matter of tradition.
-
Really! Do you think that matters? As for fighting and disagreeing, please give examples of churches fighting other church groups? Disagreeing, when people have different understanding or experiences of scripture is that wrong?

I think you will have to take a stand and tell her brother's that you are going to talk to her. First thing you must Not mention how she has acted with her mother, your illness etc, that will be seen by her as sour grapes. What has to be said is how her behaviour makes you and others feel. That her selfish behaviour devalued the rest of the family. That her attitude shows that the family is not valued by her. I would not expect anything to change, the history you've recounted shows that. Do stress that you care and love her. That you are willing to help, but that you expect to see consistent effort on her part to change how she behaves.

Every believer from other tribes, tongues, lands, denominations from around the world and throughout history. Brace your self, there will be people rubbing shoulders with you from Calvinist, dispensationalist, anti Israel and every other Christian group you don't like. You know what neither you nor those people or any one else will give a hoot about what each other believed about these matters, we will all be too busy worshipping and serving our Saviour. If we do have the opertunity to investigate these matters we will see where we were wrong and where they were right, but over all that we didn't understand it.
