I have forwarded it on to my family. I'm not doing Santa this year. God has instructed me not to. But it's hard because all these cartoons are on TV now and my son wants to watch them. What do I say to him?

But when he asks, maybe I'll let my husband handle it. I tell some of my friends that we're not doing Santa this year and they look at me like I'm the worst parent ever. I just don't feel right about it this year.

What do I say to him? You simply need to tell them the truth that Santa is a make-believe character and that there is no such thing. Society endorses Santa(as they are doing through these cartoons), but we need to live by the truth.

If he hasn't started asking who he is then you have all the oppurtunity in the world now not to introduce him into his life. Too many care too much about xmas and all the trappings that go with it, its your life, your child and you get to teach him what you want, not your friends. I never cared a hoot what my friends thought of me when we took xmas out of our lives and if they cannot understand that you are only doing what you feel God is calling you to do then really they may not be really as good of friends as you thought, friends support one another even when we don't understand some of the things they do. That is my only fear. When I was a child, I was taught that santa, the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy were all real. I believed what society and even my parents taught me about these 3 characters. When I was about 10, 11 years old, other kids at school was tell me how ridiculous I was for believing in such nonsense. They would point out to me that Santa is not real. I went back to my mom and asked her if he was real. She told me "Yes, Santa is real." A few weeks later, another kid told me "If Santa is so real, why are their starving children in ther world?" He then pointed out "If Santa always goes through the chimney, how can he go to apartment buildings that have no chimney?" That really dawned on me. I went back to my mom and asked her again. She finally came clean with me and told me the truth. I was upset that she didn't just tell me the truth to begin with. I asked her why she didn't just tell me the truth. Her response was that she didn't want to hurt me for me to find out that Santa is not real. But it was "NOT" telling the truth that really bothered me. Sooner or later, your son will find out that Santa is not real.

Has anyone ever seen the NARNIA Movies? In the first one the kids are running and hiding from the White Witch. They stumble and stagger under an old log and hide. Just then they here the sleigh pull up and see a shadow perch across the tops of their heads. Of course they encounter a man who looks alot like Santa Claus but no one ever identifies him as such. He gives them some gifts and then disappears as quickly as he came. Prior to leaving he gives Glory to God as he tells them about Aslan. To me this is the Spirit of Christmas. Right before this he-man of a Santa leaves the children in the movie he tells that winter will soon be over. It's why I continue to celebrate it and also why I explain to my children the true significance of the Holiday Peace, Dave

Santa is one upon whom the children base their dreams, their hopes. Christmas has been made to be a time of year for reflections, and stories of miracles, and times of change for the good. It is a time that parents build up for the children, to bring joy and excitement. All this wonderment, this magical time, this surreal environment is revolving around a fictional character that does no wrong, fulfills dreams, is a user of great magic, and completly loves children. Certainly I'm not speaking of the many families of believers who place Christ first and foremost in their childrens lives. But children are subjected to books, movies, songs, plays, downtown Santas and traditional stories from their very first Christmas. All this is to give them one night and one day filled with anticipation and joy. Of course the children learn to expect certain things from Santa, and to place faith in his appearance, and to hope. Once they learn the truth, that it was a fabrication of commercialism, where even the parents participated, their childlike hopes, trust and dreams are crushed. I wonder if a blow like this can condition their developing brains to guard against such future hurt and instill even a slight degree of skepticism for future hopes and dreams and faith building fertile ground? Childlike faith is a powerful thing. It should be nurtured in the truth and not tarnished with fabrications that can cause even an ounce of unbelief. Children are a clean slate - we can write anything on their hearts. I no longer believe we can in good conscious, write a known and quite colossal lie there. I can't believe I ever did think that was okay.
