I don't have a resource to find this out myself yet. Can anyone tell me what the original word used for the "birds of the air" in this verse? I'd like to know if it does mean "evil ones" or not. Thank you in advance.

Matthew 13:31,32-

"Another parable put He forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field. Which indeed is the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof." KJV

Here is the KJV Study Bible's Notes on Matthew 13:31,32 :

13:31,32. See Mark 4:30-34; Luke 13:18, 19. The mustard seed is unusually small and yet grows to a great size. The idea seems to be that the tiny beginning of the church will eventually culminate in great growth. Herbs (Gr. lachanon) are garden plants or vegetables. However, such numerical growth will come to harbor the birds (evil ones). The parable accordingly foreshawos the growth of the church into a wold power. However, outward growth is not always a true picture of spiritual depth.

You can also look it up on net.bible.org.

Just put in the verse you want to look up on the left side and hit search. When it comes up, scroll all the way down the page and put your mouse over "birds of the air".. it will give you the meaning in a pop-up box in the original Greek or Hebrew language, If you click on it, you'll get more information.

Here is what I got when I looked it up..

I heard the same thing many years ago. That's one of the reasons I quit listening to christian radio and watching religious TV programs.

I think it was originally from Alfred Hitchcock.

Thank you so much Running Gator and Blien! I'll favorite the links right now!

Actually, I did hear the interpretation in a podcast from a local minister. I was shocked at his interpretation so God told me to look it up myself. Well, I went to my "trusty" KJV Study Bilble. I didn't think there would be a notation on that part of the verse but I was shocked to discover there was AND that it said "birds of the air (evil ones)". It did not give me a reference to the original word though. Is it common for a 'study bible' to be that wrong? I mean, I totally trust the Holy Spirit to interpret God's word, but I did kind of trust the language experts. And I'm pretty sure this study bible is a fairly common and widely used bible. I could be wrong about that though.

The King James Study Bible (previously published as The Liberty Annotated Study Bible and as The Annotated Study Bible, King James Version) Copyright 1988 by Liberty University

Study helps by Thomas Nelson, Inc.

This is the info on the inside jacket.

I'm going to assume then, that the minister I heard has the same bible, but since he's been to bible college and ordained, shouldn't he know the original meaning of the original word?

Thank you again!

That's bizarre. They mixed two parables in their interpretation.

It is incorrect to assume that "birds" always refer to evil ones just because one parable uses them this way. (How do they handle Jesus referencing birds in His sermon about God's provision?)

The use of birds to represent evil ones was used in the Parable of the Sower - where the birds ate the seed.

In this parable, Jesus is emphasizing the power of the Kingdom of Heaven - how the small seed can produce a plant so large even birds can find shelter there.

In addition, it is incorrect to insert the word "church" for "the Kingdom of God." There is more to the Kingdom of God than just the body of Believers.

I would like to add: Ezek 17:23; Ps 104:12; Ezek 31:6; Dan 4:12

You mentioned in your first thread that you have been taught one way, then by hearing just one other teaching, you are confused. May I suggest that you take time to become a solid bible student so you are not so easily swayed too and fro by strange doctrines and teachings.

God Bless,

Alan

Thank you for the add ins. And yep. I am too easily swayed. The last two days God kept lighting up the word "Simple" in reference to wisdom, meaning easily influenced. I know He used this incident as an attention getter. I've always read His word and let the Holy Spirit interpret it (nothing wrong with that) but I think I've become too...comfortable? with that. He is taking me in a new direction and I believe He wants me to become more diligent in my studies than I have been. Wherever He is taking me, its important. He's raising me up, but He's also warning me. If I study His word with more than my usual care, I'll notice the false stuff when it comes. Satan's favorite torment for me is confusion. My feet are completely cemented in Jesus' rock solid foundation, but wow! The rest of me sure can get battered around!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
