One book that has always puzzled me in the Bible is the Song of Songs. I always struggle with it, because I don't understand its purpose, what it is trying to teach.

Here's someone else who could use some help

Also even one of the most um, descriptive books on relationship in the Bible, "Song of Solomon, or Song of Songs" says I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, By the gazelles or by the does of the field, Do not stir up nor awaken love Until it pleases." twice and once more for effect with out the mentioning of the gazelles. It seems to me a warning about jumping into a relationship with out being ready. Also this speaks into part of the design of marriage

Sorry to add another post, but it deserved another post. Speaking of "song of songs"..i remembered Isaiah 6:8 posted this on the "Is kissing before marriage wrong?" topic in the advice colum...I really liked his post on dating...it's in page three, the last post if i remember correctly. :emot-highfive:

best,

Lilly

One book that has always puzzled me in the Bible is the Song of Songs. I always struggle with it, because I don't understand its purpose, what it is trying to teach. And also it seems to be so much about a (sexual) love affair that I don't see the theology or spirituality behind it (?).

SOS is first and foremost a love poem describing the physical relationship between a husband and wife. Tradition attributes it to King Solomon. In ancient times, it was considered so highly charged that Jewish men under the age of 30 were forbidden to read it.

One common, albeit incorrect, explanation of the purpose of the book says that it was written as a description of God's love for the church. That explanation has been superimposed on the book relatively recently since we know for a fact that it was written long before the church existed.

Understood.

Scripture is God breathed and the Holy Spirit will use Scripture (all of Scripture) to bring to mind what needs to be fed to a person at whatever season/issue the person is in at the time...

I would rather be taught from SOS about male/female relationships than what is out "there" in this world.... :24:

AND I love the notion of God's love/care etc for US mirroring the intense emotions a married couple can/ought to have for each other .... :foot-stomp:

With all due respect, it is not entirely about sexual love. It is more emotional. The king celebrates her beauty not because she IS the most beautiful woman, but because he loves her so much that he enjoys everything about her. His love for her makes her look more beautiful than she is. I say this because beauty cannot be measured, so there is no way we can decisively say "so and so" is the most beautiful woman. So this symbolises the ideal relationship between a husband and a wife. Our Maker also has a husband wife relationship with us. So this book refers to both the ideal earthly relationship between a husband and a wife and between God and us.

As long as you are clear about the fact that that was not the original purpose of the book.

I understand what SOS is about trust me, however the Holy Spirit WILL use it and other parts of the Bible however He needs to, to get your attention about something......just like the HS used the Samaritan woman story to point something out to me about my ex-partner.....AND Himself.

This was common practise with Royalty..(prob still is)...however, not all the women "spent time" with the King - more women you had in the harem suggested greater prestige - which just makes the woman in SOS even more special since she was a hardworking 'commoner"....

best,

Lilly

Why thanks Lilly, I was going to post that very thing again!

Also I agree, that is more about the emotions that intimacy bring, rather then just the physical. Since some of the most descriptive phrases do not make sense outside of the emotion.

Song of Solomon 4:4 (New King James Version)

4 Your neck is like the tower of David,

Built for an armory,

On which hang a thousand bucklers,

All shields of mighty men.

One last thing, it shows the joy of a marriage sexual relationship, in the way He intended it. Remember he was the one who invented it, and made it more then reproduction but as a way to draw closer to your spouse. More of a Knowing of each other. Thats why the word Know is used in the Bible for this act!

Again this is not about a love affair, but about a marriage!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
