UK Law Forces Almost All Christian Adoption Agencies to Close

LONDON, England - Nearly every Christian adoption agency in the United Kingdom has been forced to close after resisting the government's equality laws.

The legislation prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, and requires adoption agencies to consider same-sex couples as potential parents.

However, Christian agencies say they can't comply because homosexuality goes against their beliefs.

Since the U.K. equality bill was passed in April, the number of adopted foster care children has dropped by 30 percent, and it's estimated there are 4,000 children still awaiting adoption.

However some agencies have managed to remain open after re-branding, including the Cabrini Children's Society.

"It has been difficult because any re-branding exercise is difficult," said the society's chief executive Terry Connor. "And it has been a question of convincing our supporters that we are still operating in much the same way as we always have done in terms of the services we were delivering."

Connor added that the increasing number of orphans awaiting adoption is concerning.

"I think it is a worrying time. Statistics have decreased in recent year, and that is worrying because there are at any one time over 60,000 in public care," Connor said.

Christian Institute spokesman Mike Judge believes the equality law is direct discrimination against Christians standing by their beliefs and seeking what's best for the children.

"Well this is yet another example of Christians being sidelined from public life. Remember, it was Christians who pioneered adoption work in the first place, and it's faith-based adoption agencies now that have done a remarkable job in finding loving homes for hard to place kids," he said. "And sadly it's the children who are going to most suffer from this."

The same law cost Christian doctor Sheila Matthews her job on an adoption panel. She felt homosexual couples shouldn't be able adopt because children are "best placed" with a father and mother in a stable relationship.

"I became increasingly uncomfortable about approving same-sex couples," Matthews recalled. "And when I asked to abstain from voting on these cases I was dismissed from the adoption panel."

Matthews recently lost an appeal against the decision.

"The Christian adoption agencies were doing a fantastic job in working with harder to place children," she said of the decreasing Christian adoption groups. "And I think it's a great loss they're not able to continue doing this."

Laws are useless when a person can go to another eu country to go round it.This applies to eu directives as well. More importantly it depends on each one of us to make laws unpopular.

It started with the catholic adoption agencies and it has spread all over the place. You can no longer foster in most places if you are a Christian... you cannot operate a bed and breakfast / hotel/ guest house if you object to same sex couples even though for many years it was acceptable to object to non married couples.

It is not the babies that are not getting homed.. there are not enough of those to satisfy every couple that want to adopt. It is the children that are " not perfect" or are older and may have been abused and have problems and THOSE are the " hard to place " children that get left in institutions to become even more damaged and are NOT wanted by the " PC " groups.

It is not quite the same here... if you have the money you can go abroad and adopt no matter what your beliefs but you still have to get through the laws here before you can bring a child into the country .

No matter how unpopular these laws are with Christians since there is NO political party that will stand up for us ( and the Christian alliance has only ONE seat in government ) PLEASE tell me how we get them repealed ??

we are in the middle of a major recession with money very tight everywhere yet yesterday the loony ..oops sorry PC correct " equality " party spend thousands of pounds sending out leaflets telling everyone that there is no truth in the " rumour " that illegal immegrants and failed asylum seakers are jumping the queue for medical treatment etc ... the day after a failed asylum seaker sold his story of how he was refused a sex change operation in his own country and came here to get one ... no waiting, no question of refusing ... the 24 THOUSAND pounds needed was found even though he had never contributed a penny into the system

I wonder at what point we began non-violent resistance? What I mean is those children still need to be adopted and Christians are the only ones who can do it in a Godly way, at what point do we simply break the law?

If you have a private adoption ..ie the birth mother/parents chose someone to hand the baby over to it STILL has to be approved or the child is NOT legally adopted and the adoptive parents cannot sign for medical treatment/ schooling /anything that needs parental or guardian signature and they CAN be help for kidnap since they would have NO legal right to look after the child
