1 On that day, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered,and began to pluck the ears of corn,and to eat.2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath day.3 He said unto them, have you not read what David did when he was an hungered,and they that were with him 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread which was not lawful for him to eat,neither thay that were with him, nor the priests.

What is shewbread?

Lev. 24:5-9

5 "You are to take fine flour and use it to bake twelve loaves, one gallon per loaf. 6 Arrange them in two rows, six in a row, on the pure table before ADONAI. 7 Put frankincense with each row to be an offering made by fire to ADONAI in place of the bread and as a reminder of it. 8 Regularly, every Shabbat, he is to arrange them before ADONAI ; they are from the people of Isra'el, as a covenant forever. 9 They will belong to Aharon and his sons; and they are to eat them in a holy place; because for him they are, of the offerings for ADONAI made by fire, especially holy. This is a permanent law."

It represents the presence or face of God. Heres a little exert from a guys teachings I like;

"And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me always." The phrase "and thou shalt set" is actually taken from one Hebrew word. This word comes from the verbal root natan (נתן) which means "to give". In this context or use "to set upon" is very applicable. Whatever the shewbread is, God desires that it be set before Him always - tamiyd (תמיד) - continuously. The word shewbread or lechem paniym (לחם פנים) is literally the bread of His face, or presence. God uses bread to symbolize or speak of His presence. God's presence is experienced in obedience to His word, which is also likened to Himself. Yeshua‘ said in Mattityahu (Matthew) 4:4 that "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." The comparison is literal bread that gives life to the body, with the bread of God which gives life to the soul and spirit, and Yeshua‘ quickly verified that in His response to hasatan in the desert. God's presence is in His word. This is precisely why I will overkill this area in all of my teaching. Yeshua‘ is to be known through the reception and action of His word. If you are seeking the presence of the Lord in your life, try obeying His words!

What is shewbread?

It's also called showbread. Curiously, I did a concordance search for shewbread, and the Scriptures don't really give a lot of information about how it was made or used for. Twelve loaves of shewbread would be set out on the golden table inside the tabernacle/temple, and at the end of a week, new loaves would be baked and laid out on the table, and the old loaves would be eaten by the priests.
