I believe the pillars were given those names because of what the words mean, not because they were named after people.

Their Masonic symbols and will have multiple meanings depending on what level one has attained. At least to the Masons.

The student may not of been lying to you, there are off the wall groups out there that call themselves Masonic and evil might be apart of their endeavors, but there is no association between them and Free Masons. I think that is where some of the misunderstandings come in about Free Masons, people hear stories about these off the wall groups and associate them with Free Masons, when in truth their not a part of Free Masons.
