And practice..... practice....... practice.... so you don't shoot me instead of the bad guy mugging me...

It helps, but still a long way to go. That's a good point; the guy who killed those people in Aurora, CO. had no criminal history so background checks alone would not do the job. Ah....but then no one would be working on the problem because there would be no humans to kill and, in fact, we wouldn't be reading this thread either. Kind of negates the whole thing, right? Guest shiloh357
It may be that we can't do much of anything at all even if we suspect someone is planning something. I mean, you can't arrest someone for something you think they will do.

I mean, you can't arrest someone for something you think they will do. This is the root. If you want a free society you can't arrest people who have done nothing illegal, but you suspect may be dangerous. If you start doing it then it's pretty much guaranteed that people who aren't dangerous at all will be victims of persecution and/or vendettas by governments from the local all of the way to the federal level. Yes... but, when someone flips-out and up and decides to kill himself or others , the background check still will not help that gunman. I have to speak of this certain incident that just happened in my town, about 2 months ago. A married couple in their late 30's got killed by a handgun. Her 2 brothers were in the house at the time. She had just served supper and they all ate. She and her husband decided to go to their bedroom . One of the brothers , which was schizo. ...took the other brothers' handgun and went into the bedroom and shot and killed his sister and her husband. The other brother was watching t.v. at the time ...and said that , the gun belonged to him, and his brother was schizo. and is a patient at a mental clinic. One will never know , the guy just upped and kill his sister and her husband. They were not arguing or anything like that. I think along with a background check...would be to check for any mental illnesses. Although this is only a help to solve some of the problems, we are having with gunman, wanting to go into a place of business to shoot and kill people. They will just use something else. Personally If I wanted to take out a bunch of people, I'd chain the doors closed and just set the place on fire. Then everyone dies.... The world has been plagued with sic people throughout history and it's just part of life on this crazy planet.

A Cop.... American tourist upset that he couldn't shoot some Canadians 3 hrs ago Michigan cop Walt Wawra and his wife recently vacationed in Canada, which was OK, except for the part where he couldn't pull his gun on some overly inquisitive Canadians. Wawra wrote to the Calgary Sun, expressing his frustration with Canada's gun laws, explaining how, during a stroll through a city park, two youths asked the couple if they'd "been to the Stampede yet?" THEN THEY ASKED AGAIN, which made Wawra assume they didn't "have good intentions" and oooh doggie, he wished he'd been allowed to carry his gun. (What if they'd tried to talk about hockey?!) Canadians who’ve read the letter are largely relieved that Wawra had to leave his weapon on the American side of the border. [Source] <---Click for more details.
