Just a technicality: There is not a refining process that can make "gold so refined you can see through it." Gold, as a malleable metal, has a crystalline structure that doesn't allow light to pass through. The more refined it gets, the LESS photons can get through!

Gold, however, has been used to DOPE glass molecules and color it bright red!

Wikipedia says at Glass coloring and color marking,

So, if gold is in it at all, that might be the result. Perhaps, THAT is the meaning of the "mingled with fire" phrase.
