@DRS81

Correct, belief and faith are the same thing. A belief/faith *lack* evidence for whatever they are claiming. Thus, having a lack of belief in the existence of god/s, Atheists would not be going on faith.

A child would not have a belief in it's parents, it knows it's parents exist as they are physical. Each time the child interacts with the parents, it is given confirmation/evidence of their existence. Now if parents of the child were invisible now that would take faith.

But belief can transform into knowledge as well, knowledge being justified belief.  Are you sure you don't believe there is no god?  Is that tantamount do disbelieving in god?  Is it word magic?

Faith - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Faith?s=t

1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.

An atheist has confidence in this thing, the thing being unbelief in God. This confidence produces faith. - DRS81

I see where you're going with this.  DRS81 should have more properly said I believe Santa Claus does not exist, rather than invoking faith.  The belief in no Santa could then be founded upon lack of evidence and the implausibility of the story overall.  Or you might argue that we should word it a "disbelief" in Santa.  Is this then a belief about Santa or no?

Posted

What do you have faith in to say that Santa Claus doesn't exist?

What do I have faith IN? In the fact I haven't seen or felt Santa, ever. Jesus however has proven to me he exists through the love of the Holy Spirit, and that love is physical and real.

If we use that definition of faith, than I have faith that George Bush isn't a Reptilian. The problem I have with this definition is that I see faith as a positive claim, meaning that you claim something to exist, rather than a negative claim which is a claim that something does not exist.

What do you have faith in to say that Santa Claus doesn't exist?

You can say for instance that you have faith ( strong belief ) that the evidence shows santa doesn't exist. ie. No located santa dwelling at the North Pole, your dad dressed in a santa suit, no flying sleigh sightings etc.

I think we are barking up the wrong tree.  I don't think faith is involved here at all.  What we have is a strong lack of belief in Santa, which I think is what D-9 is getting at.

Hebrews 11:1  "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

This is the description of what Christian faith is.  Belief is derived from evidence.  When someone makes a statement, and the evidence is that the probability is high the it is true, you would say "I believe you may be right.", not "I faith you are right."  The opposite is also true.  One would say "I don't believe you."  You would not say "I don't faith you."

So I think that answers the question-- no atheists don't have faith (another thread).  I agree with you.  I think that it cheapens the definition otherwise.

Don't Have Faith

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 2 Peter 3:13-17

Don't Have Sight

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 2 Corinthians 4:3-5

Don't Have Science

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:20-21

Playing In The Theater Of Their Mind

And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart. Jeremiah 18:12

Truthfully

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6

Jesus Saves

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6

Science Won't

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John 2:15-17

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
