Can you equate controlling eating to giving up smoking?

Is there any fundamental difference?

Well, cigarettes are a drug. Some people want to say that smoking is "A bad habit".No,it is a very serious drug that is very, very difficult to give up.I have read that it is harder to give up cigarettes than a heroin addiction. You will have withdrawal symptoms with coming off of a drug. That includes alcohol and coffee. It is a life time change to make a decision to eat healthier. The healthiest way to lose weight is just to eat less but eat healthier foods.I have a friend who lost a ton of weight. He has kept it off but once a week he ate everything he loved and as much as he wanted. It kept him from crazing the bad foods that he liked.I am sorry fez I might have gone off topic or did not answer your question how you would like.

Keep in mind that I have not judged smokers or obese people .....

Nicotine is addictive. So in that, there is a difference.

I also think the growth and other hormones present in the meat raised at least in th us is in part responsible for our weight problems. They are designed to fatten up the animals. So it fattens us up.

The antibiotics and hormones in our meats now are bad for us.I usually eat meats that are free of these.Although they are more expensive.

Sheba, those growth hormones in meat and chicken and even in other foods should be banned in the USA ..its banned  here in NZ.  The health effects on humans is awful it has been linked to cancer and goodness knows what else they'll find.  It also passes from the cows into cow patties which  eventually is passed into the water systems. It needs to be terminated pronto. I would definitely become a vegetarian if I lived in your country.

Well, smoking is addictive - but not needed for survival. Eating is needed for survival. Self control (in the power of the Holy Spirit) can go a long way in controlling both. I was able to give up the cigarettes by God's grace, but eating presents a somewhat different problem in that everywhere you go here (meaning in town) food is in your face. Snack machines, minimarkets, gas stations all have junk food right there - definitely a lust of the eyes thing and that makes things more difficult

.

It is really common to quit smoking and then turn to something else.....food.And put on weight.

What does obesity mean to you?Do you look at someone who is obese and reject them?Or do you look deeper into the person? Some men loath heavy women while some men like them.

Obesity is one of those tricky subjects. Obesity can be defined as “the condition of being obese; increased body weight caused by excessive accumulation of fat.”

Obesity leads to a lower life expectancy and/or increased health problems including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, etc.

When I see someone who is obese I don’t automatically reject them. I have many friends and relatives who are wonderful people who have this health challenge for various reasons. I do try to help people who struggle with this health challenge to see that depending on the circumstances there are things one can do to alleviate this health challenge.

Their are so many more heavy people in our society today.Do you think all people who are obese eat alot?Do you think it could involve mental illnesses?

To me there can be a few reasons for someone to become obese:

1. Apathy: lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern for one’s health. This is due largely to the fact that we no longer walk or ride bikes to places in the Western Culture – we simply drive or are driven to our destination. Exercise isn’t a part of daily lives but something you must go out of your way and schedule in in many cases.

2. Depression: severe feelings of dejection/despondency typically felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.

3. Lack of exercise or physical activity. It is good to exercise 3-4 times a week if nothing else walking or jogging.

4. Diet – This is a big one. What I’ve seen is lack of education regarding fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, meats & beans, milk and cheese, and “good fats”, etc.

food_pyramid.gif

4a. Excessive calories/food intake

4b. Unbalanced food intake (too much fat, carbohydrates, and sugars)

5. Genetic pre-disposition to gaining weight

6. Health challenges, illnesses, or disorders

7. Malnutrition at an early life can cause children increased chances of obesity

That’s just my 2 cents.

God bless,

GE

What does obesity mean to me ..well I see like this..you get plump. then fat, then obese.  I have never rejected anyone who is obese because one never knows why that person is like that. They could have health issues which have contributed to their obesity, it could also be  a mental issue.

I would say that most obese people just eat too much,  again there are many reasons why people overeat..for some its comforting, some are simply gluttons.

1. Gluttony is a sin but how often if ever have you this coming from the pulpit?? very seldom if ever.  I wonder why..perhaps the pews might become a little too empty the following week.

2. I must confess that whenever I see an obese person in the supermarket or having a meal somewhere I have had some really unkind thoughts going through my head.

1. Sometimes it is much easier to address sins that not everyone struggles with. For example it is easier to talk about adultery, homosexuality, sex outside of marriage, etc. while ignoring sins that plague the church unchecked such as gluttony, gossip, in-fighting, pride, etc.

2. I do confess as well that when I see a rather large person at a supermarket (buying 20 "personal pizzas", stocking up on ice-cream and sweets, stocking up on junk food, chips, etc.) or eating out (particularly fast food and pizza) I do get frustrated as well.

My 2 cents.

God bless,

I would think the medical community (and close family) would know more the truth of the matter. Whether it is cushings or thyroid or just plain lack of activity and way overeating. Even just certain perscriptions, such as Predisone might put on weight but I have never heard of it being put on to that extent.

It becomes a disability regardless (depending on the amount put on) I would think. But yeah that's pretty out of the norm and pretty sad. I would probably venture a guess that it was more from gluttonous overeating, but I don't know.

Perhaps it is over eating and gluttonous eating. But why?I don't know if I would rather be over weight or look like some of the people who have anorexia.Boy that is scary to see someone so malnourished. It is really hard to treat too.

Obesity can be a mental eating disorder on the one end of the spectrum.

Anorexia and bulimia are definitely mental eating disorders on the other end of the spectrum.

Anorexia-Bulimia.jpg

Both are unhealthy and we should strive for a balance in life.

My 2 cents.

God bless,

GE

My point too GE.

We castigate smokers, ban them to corners and fish tanks with fans, tell them they are sinning against their body, put horrible pictures and messages on the packs we buy, and bring up scripture to "prove" it. (for those of you who are unaware, I gave up smoking over a year ago, overnight, after smoking for 40 years. It was the easiest thing I have ever done. I prayed on Saturday night. "Jesus I want to give up smoking, but I can't do it without you, please help me.". I woke on Sunday to no craving, no cough, no shortness of breath, and have not touched a smoke since, nor have I once craved. God is awesome!). Please understand I am not defending smoking, it is bad for you.

But then we sit our overweight butts on the pew on a Sunday and continue to judge those that smoke.

There is no difference, in my eyes, between smoking and overeating. Both are bad for you, and both are challenges we need, as Christians, to face with prayer and in faith that Jesus is the great healer. Both put more people in hospital than do most other things.

Neither honor God in any way, or set an example as the light on the hill that Jesus would want us to be.

I don't judge either, coming from where I was with smoking, but I just reiterate that both need to be eliminated from our walk if we can.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
