2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

So a ring causes you to be unpure? No....Its called being cheap! Dump this legalist pastor and buy your sweet wife a ring.

God Bless

Dan

Dear fields,

This is just my opinion.  You don't have to accept it if you dislike it.  DISCLAIMER:  I am not a christian.

Why does some churches out law wedding rings and others dont?

I can only guess. I copied the following description of the origins of wedding rings below from some innocuous website:

Wedding Rings History

We are all probably familiar with the fact that wedding rings, or "circles", symbolized perfection, perfect unity with no beginning and no end. For some it represents holiness, perfection and peace, as well as the sun, earth and universe. You may even be aware that it was once believed that the third finger of the left hand had a special vein, "vena amoris" or "the vein of love", running directly to the wearers heart. And it is from this romantic custom that we today have the custom of placing wedding rings on this finger.

Ancient Egyptians believed that unbroken circular rings insured eternal love and devotion. Wedding Rings were placed on the third finger of the left hand because it was thought that the vein in that finger ran directly to the heart.

well this pastor is telling me that he frowns on that because in the bible it says

1 Peter 3:2-4 (New International Version)

2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

so he says that gold and jewelry are a no no- but its not going to send you to hell..and he's trying to get me a position within the church to lead so im trying to walk right..but my wife wants a new ring for our anniversary..the same ring i been promising for FOUR YEARS..and im in line to buy it but this guy says not to..am i wrong for doing right by my wife?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This is sad. The passage is clear as crystal that Peter is talking about beauty, not the sin of a ring. Peter wants women to be beautiful by purity and reverence, not from outer adornment. Wedding/Engagement rings have really nothing to do with outer adornment. A wedding band itself is usually very plain.

Now, obviously, people can get caught up in the carots. Some women might marry a guy based on the size of the diamond. This is sad, and maybe then we can apply this passage from 1 Peter.

Grrrr. Why would you, as and adult, have another person dictating what goes on in your home? I will never undertand this. There are THREE people in your marriage - you, your wife and God. Like Dwink said - RUN. But I can't understand why you would need to be told that.

Dear God-man,

This is just my opinion. You don't have to accept it if you dislike it. DISCLAIMER: I am not a christian.

You know, Frog, I have to say, for a person who prefaces his statements with "I am not a Christian" you certainly seem to have answered quite a few questions much the same way a Christian would. Your answer here is right on the money!

Please don't misunderstand. Although I understand why some christians feel like wedding rings, and christmas trees and mistletoe are forbidden things because they have pagan origins, it doesn't mean I feel the same way. Remember, I am not christian, and have no problem with things pagan, jewish, mormon, etc.

Even among christians, you cannot agree. Hence you have over 10,000 individual denominations. Some shun all (and I mean all) worldly things and live as hermits. Some live freely in the world. I would say most are somewhere in between the two extremes.

All that's left for you to do is decide.

I have decided. I am exactly who I am.

Regards,

UndecidedFrog

My wife and I both wear our wedding rings. I'm glad I wear mine, because several times at work or at a few other places, I've had women come up to me and make comments like, "Oh never mind, you are married", One woman at work told me that she thought I was , well never mind, but anyway, she went on to say, "but then I saw your wedding ring and said oh shucks". I had witnessed to that same woman I work with, and figured that would scare her away, and make her leave me alone, but it didn't, but the ring keeps her from any further flirting though. I don't think it would displease the Lord to wear a wedding ring, especially since I wear mine because I love and adore my wife. When a guy starts to flirt with my wife not knowing she is married, she just flashes her ring in his face. I think wedding rings or wedding bands are a good idea.

Wedding rings ( at least for the bride, the one for the groom is a more moderan tradition) But it comes from pagan practice and was actually against church law for any Christian to use them for over the first 800 years of church history.

So if you wish to follow the bibical church, then it would be against thier teachings, since it is a pagan custom and traditin.

It was a Bishop from the City of Rome that first allowed its use in the Christian church, but only because so many of the people wanted to use them because "everyone else was doing it"

So they designed a Christian meaning of unity and ever lasting and blessed it and made it Christian.

So basicly some churches don't allow it, since it was not allowed in the first and orginal church. and has pagan roots.

It showed the wifes slavery or ownership by her husband, it represents the chains or other binding that would have held the wife that was captured, and showed that she was now the husbands property.

I would bet if the minister explained the ring to the bride in those terms, she may not want it either.

I don't wear a ring for two reasons: one is because I don't want to ruin it or rip my finger off with the kinds of things I work with and around. Two is because I never was one to wear jewelry. I don't even wear a watch. I don't need to be reminded that I'm married. I get reminded that each and every day.

Suffer ring. :wub::wub::24:

Thanks, Chuck. I'll remember that when those 'ole Halloween threads start up next year. :24:

In a sense Fr Chuck, they still represent that today. A wife's body is not her own, but her husbands as well. I don't see this in a slavery or bondage type, though a wife is bonded to her husband.

On the other hand, just because the church for the first 800 years did not allow wedding rings or engagement rings does not mean we aren't following biblical truth if we do wear them.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
