Headship is a key issue throughout the Bible. Think of the chain of command in a military.

The "chain of command" is God > Man > Woman, according to multiple passages in the Bible.

Think back all the way to the beginning. The serpent deceived Eve, who went to Adam, who then, despite being in a position of headship over her, listened to her and, hoping to be like God, ate the forbidden fruit. In other words, The Fall, the start of everything bad since, was a defiant reversal in that chain. Serpent > Eve > Adam > God.

The picture of proper marriage is this, too. The husband has headship over the wife, and is to be a spiritual leader to her. When women preach and teach to men in the church, it is another reversal of that chain of command, which God has set up as a picture of his relationship with the church.

God > Church

Husband > Wife

Yes, the husband does have headship, yet, I think the rest of the lesson about headship gets overlooked far too often.

Luke 22:26   But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

Matthew 20:25-28

 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Philippians 2:5-7 “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

What does it really mean to have headship?  To lead?

"To lead in love," would maybe be a simple summation. More aptly, "to lead as Christ leads," which is in love and willing servitude, giving Himself up for His bride. But it is leading nonetheless; there is no compromise in authority. You can't leave that side out of the conversation, as you said, but that's the conversation about headship itself. In regards to this conversation, specifically about women in the church, I would say that it's not as relevant. Not directly relevant, anyway.
