It has worked *very well* for him politically generally speaking. I cannot imagine him having gotten elected had he not been so combative. You can certainly argue that a couple of times it has hurt him during the election, but it certainly, overall, was a very effective strategy. I think he trolls the press, for lack of a better term. I think saturday was him trolling the press, rather than him getting "baited" into a response. It controlled the news cycle while he's still trying to get controversial cabinet members through. Rex tillerson survived his committee vote during all this. All of these sidelines the press and him get into it on are just going to help him get his agenda through. You cannot fight against an agenda, as the media, if you are busy trying to score points on him for calling you out on crowd size. Trump has the initiative. On a lot of the stuff he is going to be doing it will be beneficial for him to have the mainstream media laser focused on a sideshow. I have long since been done thinking that he just hits back without thinking about it. If he does and this is all just trump being trump, with no political thought going into it, then he has basically tripped into a very successful strategy and continues to trip right into it while being totally oblivious to the benefits of it. But it is not a new thing for Trump, he has been this way his whole life, or at least his adult life.  He sued an author because he estimated his net worth too low, in Trump's opinion.
