I wouldn't use the word "mythology" in all cases, but I do think he used stories with which the people he was speaking were familiar. And Lazarus and the Rich man is an excellent case in point. Some people who don't believe the Bible aren't genuine Christians, as is the case of my friend who prays to her dead parents. She has made up her own religion, and has created a god that suits her ideas because she doesn't like some of the things the Bible plainly teaches.
