Question about John 6:29

John 6:29 is translated two different ways:

 

Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

 

Jesus told them, "This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent."

 

 

So which is it?  Is us believing in Jesus God's work to do, or is it the only work he wants from us?

Looks like they are both, in essence, saying the same thing.

When you start drilling down deep into the meaning of words and phrases, it's critical to use the original language and context. To get to the nitty gritty, it is important to not just read it, but study it within the context of the chapter and book, as well as the whole bible, and from an original language perspective. The original koine greek is a good starting place. 

 

It is preceded by this question:  Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”

Did Jesus say “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Or did Jesus say, “Truly I tell you today, you will be with Me in Paradise.”

 

It's one of those, "Let's eat grandma" vs "let's eat, grandma" sort of things.

I understand there is no equivalent to a comma in Greek, so we get to guess based on context. Fortunately, these sorts of scripture are mainly just worth arguing for those that want a definitive answer to the age old question, "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

I believe Galatians chapter 5 verse 6 sums up the whole bible, and what Jesus wants us to do.

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love.
