I attended an Episciple Church where this was repeated. I still have a problem with the Jesus going to hell line.

The way I heard this explained is like unto some of the other posts.

Jesus died a physical death, like all will. His soul was separated from his body. He descended to such a place as

Abraham's Bosom from the teaching of Lazareth and the rich man. There he freed those who had "died" before

and were awaiting their Savior.

The frequent New Testament affirmations that Jesus was raised from the "dead" presupposes that He was in the realm

of the dead prior to His resurrection. Scripture calls the abode of the dead "hell"-Sheol in Hebrew- Hades in Greek because

those who are there are deprived of the vision of God.

1Peter 4:6 The Gospel was preached even to the dead

That this was the last phase of Jesus' Messianic Mission pretty significant for the redemptive work to be for all men in

all times. Christ went down to the depths of death so that "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those

who hear will live" John 5:25 I know that's spewing verses but ...

"In His human soul united to His divine person, the dead Christ went to the realm of the dead. He opened heaven's

gates for the just who had gone before him. " CCC:637

I attended an Episciple Church where this was repeated. I still have a problem with the Jesus going to hell line.

(Teacher) THE APOSTLES' CREED ABOUT GOD THE FATHER:

(Students) "We believe in God the Father almighty"

"Maker of heaven and earth"

(Teacher) THE APOSTLES' CREED ABOUT JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD:

(Students) "And Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord"

"Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit"

"Born of the virgin Mary"

"Suffered under Pontius Pilate"

"Was crucified, dead and buried"

"He descended into hell"

"The third day he rose from the dead"

"He ascended into heaven"

"And sits at the right hand of God the Father"

"From where he will come to judge the living and the dead"

(Teacher) THE APOSTLES' CREED ABOUT GOD'S SPIRIT, THE HOLY SPIRIT:

(Students) "We believe in the Holy Spirit"

"The holy catholic Church (Church of Jesus Christ)"

"The communion of the saints"

"The forgiveness of sins"

"The resurrection of the body"

"And the Life Everlasting"

Someone care to explain because I don't get it. I refuse to sing or repeat this line because I don't believe Jesus actually went to Hell. I have heard about a holding place where he met Saints. I'm not even sure about that. What gives?

Dan

He went to the hades, the state of being dead. Hades and Sheol mean the same thing. The state of the dead. Untill being raised we all go there. Read John 3:13. There is only one man in heaven.

The Bible tells us that Jesus died physically for our sins. In order to have been resurrected from the dead, He had to first have been dead. However, His spirit did not die. ("Father, into thy hands I commit My spirit"). Now, we may say "I believe this or that... " but if the Bible does not confirm what we believe, then it is not the Bible that is wrong.

Amen to that! :emot-hug:

Like Christ, another thread is resurrected! This thread has been dead for 4 1/2 years ... but I will reply anyway.

The problem with 1 Peter 4:6 is that the word dead can be either physically or metaphorically. Dead can be either those who breathed their last breath, or spiritually dead. If you take Ephesians 4:8-10 and 1 Peter 3:18-20, you have a better picture of what Christ did for those three days. Let's add these verses ...

Ephesians 4:8-10 (New American Standard Bible)

8 Therefore it says,

"WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH,

HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES,

AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN."

9 (Now this expression, "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)

1 Peter 3:18-20 (New American Standard Bible)

18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,

20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.

Hope this helps.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
