Why would you want to read about another religion that does not hold Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior? I do not think a born again Christian would have that desire.

If someone were strong in faith and could investigate without fear of confusion, sure, it could assist in being able to witness to members of another religion. If that strength were lacking and research would only serve to confuse them, then no, it doesn't do nobody much good. 1

If you plan on debating religious beliefs or witnessing to people of other faiths it can be pretty useful to know a little of what they believe in and the history of their religion. In my own case researching these things reinforced my belief in Jesus, though I realize that's not the case with everyone. 3

It's similar to learning the history of other people. I went to a Catholic school and they taught us about other religions I think so that we would be more tolerant and understanding of the people who follow them. There are priests and bishops that I like to listen to who know a lot about other religions and even incorporate their teachings into their sermons. That sounds like the words Satan would whisper in your ear. You should only stay grounded on Jesus Christ. 1

I know of a an Anglican clergyman's wife in the 1970's who decided to do a University course on Comparative Religion. The first thing she was taught is that no one religion is better or worse than the other, since it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are comfortable with your belief. A few lectures and papers later this lady became quite confused, professing a belief in reincarnation and saying that she no longer believed that Jesus Christ was the only One through whom anyone can have an enlightened relationship with God. I also have a friend who more recently has studied Comparative Religion at University, but he did so in order to better witness to non-Christians and to show them the errors and falsehoods of all non-Christian beliefs. This he does extremely well, so whether it is safe for a Christian to study materials that promote other beliefs depends on their being able to discern the counterfeit from the real. Col 2:8-9 (8) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (9) For in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 1

Just know that reading a spiritual book besides the Bible was authored by Satan. 2

The ancient scribes of the Tanakh would often quote Sumarian stuff and insert Yahweh's name. They would also poke fun at the various pantheons. Check out David's almost word for work 'poke' at the Baal cycle. If you do not know your enemy, you will not see it when it rears its ugly head. Like the x-mass stuff and the 'green tree' worship that goes back to Babylon, Ishtar and the celebration of Tammuz (Dec 25 th). It is all there in the Tanakh where the prophets rail against the priests for their secret abominations. Our so-called Christian habits are steeped in pagan rites and mystical religions. A lot came from the RCC and its ideas of 'inclusion'. OH. Now where have I heard of all-inclusive ideas recently..?

It will become a lonely road since few believers know about God HATING mixtures. Mixing profane with holy is not the best way to follow the Lord.
