I have noticed there are a few Bob Dylan fans out there. So this thread is for all of you. You need to list your top 5 favourite Dylan songs of all time. But you are also welcome to add lyrics, quote songs and just generally discuss his music. You can also talk about other similar musicians or any music you happen to like that you think is relevant to the discussion. :emot-talk:

Please note: This is not a thread for debating what music may be listened to or not. If you want to talk about such things, start your own thread. If you think he is evil and want to say so, do it somewhere else. This is for those who like, listen to and enjoy his music or have something positive to add. :33:

My dad is a huge Bob Dylan fan. And so from a young age I have come to know his music. Now lets face it, he is not everyone's cup of tea. And while I personally think his way of singing brings the best out of the songs, he is definitely not going to win awards for the purity of his voice :whistling:. And there have been many who have done a great job of covering his work (Joan Baez, the Byrds, etc)  But he has had a major influence in music. He has a talent for writing incredible lyrics. Even Marlene Dietrich, the great German cabaret singer, sang one of his songs.

So now I need to pick my 5 favourites.  A difficult task. It changes with my mood, so this is a list of the ones I happen to like right now :D

So in no particular order: :emot-drums:

Every Grain of Sand

Desolation Row

Visions of Johanna

Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands

Tambourine Man

But let me just make it clear. that it doesn't scratch the surface of all the great songs he wrote.

Not even close. Nowhere near close enough. Great start though. Thanks for the thread, bro!

Here's a good one and a tremendous cover also by The Byrds. An all time favorite. Chimes of Freedom.

  1. Chimes of Freedom

    Far between sundown's finish
    An' midnights broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
    As majestic bells of bolts
    Struck shadows in the sound
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An' for each an' every underdog soldier in the night
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Even though a cloud's white curtain
    In a far-off corner flashed
An' the hypnotic splattered mist Was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look
Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flash

ok make it top 10. Even that would be hard. so that means I can add 5 more to my own list too:

Chimes of Freedom

It's Alright Ma (I'm only bleeding)

My Back Pages

Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

Like a Rolling Stone

Of course you can talk about any song you like, but I would love to see which you consider to be at the very top (no pressure)

Songs ABOUT Dylan:

Stagefright ( The Band )

Diamonds and Rust ( Joan Baez )

Well as we march down

As we march down to Finario

Well the captain fell in love

With a lady like a dove

The name that she had was pretty PEGGY-O

Some songs can be attributed to Bob's gf' s - Echo Helmstrum, Susie Rotolo, Joan Baez, Sarah Lowndes, even Maria Muldar

"I'd love to dance with you, Maria, but my hands are on fire"

Worst book I ever bought - TARANTULA - but I had to have it cuz Dylan wrote it

Video clips - EAT THE DOCUMENT, sumpn else I can't remember - DON'T LOOK BACK?

An early interview, reporter asks Bob "How many folksingers would you say there are in the United States?"

He said either 136 or 142
