If it's not part of the about 6500 languages spoken in the world, then it's an unknown tongue. It goes without saying, God understands it. No human should be able to interpret it. You might understand the message the tongue is passing across, but if you haven't learnt the language, you shouldn't be able interpret the tongue word for  word. One is only able to interpret a tongue word for word if it's one's arterial language or one learnt it. For example, my arterial language is Yorùbá. It's a language spoken in Africa. Arterial language means a language you learn by growing up where it's been spoken. A language you learn during your critical period. Critical period - The critical period hypothesis is the subject of a long-standing debate in linguistics and language acquisition over the extent to which the ability to acquire language is biologically linked to age. I can speak English because I was taught in school. I'm tired of people giving us gibberish. If God wants you to FULLY understand a message he will give it to you in a language you understand. Please take note of the word "fully". You could get the message he's passing through the gift of the word of knowledge. You just know what he's saying though most of the time you can't explain how you know and can't interpret the tongue word for word. To interpret word for word you need to know the words and what they mean individually. Ask the interpreter tell me the words and what they mean. Thanks for reading.

Yes, you are correct.

1 Corinthians 14: 27, 28:  "If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.  But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God."

Maybe what happens is that some persons might hear the tongue in a language they understand though some other people might hear it as an unknown tongue. There is biblical precedence for this - John 12:27-30 -

“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine."

Now, John the writer might have not been present when this incident happened but received a revelation of it. God might have revealed to him later that he spoke from heaven and what he spoke. Therefore John's story of what happened doesn't count (whether God spoke in a known tongue or not).

Some of the crowd said they heard thunder, some said an angel spoke to Jesus. But we know the tongue in which God spoke from what Jesus said - Verse 30 -  Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine."

If the voice was for the people's benefit it makes sense that God would have spoken to them in a language they would understand.

What I'm trying to say is there's nothing God cannot do - A speaker might speak in a tongue and a hearer might hear one thing and the other another. This happened to Kenneth E. Hagin - He was so into the Spirit he couldn't speak in English, only in tongues. He spoke to an assistant in tongues and the assistant replied him in tongues. Hagin said he though heard him in English. Hagin also said he was sure the people heard the assistant in an "unknown tongue."

So it could happen that the interpreter hears the tongue in a language he understands while other people hear an unknown tongue. Besides "Nothing is impossible with God" - Luke 1:37.

Thank you for reading. God bless you.

Please guys I'm not referring to the private use of tongues - Speaking in tongues to yourself and to God. You can speak in tongues and interpret - to yourself. In fact you should want to. What I'm trying to address is the interpretation of another person speaking in tongues. To interpret another person's message in tongues; you should hear it in a language you understand though other people hear an unknown tongue. If not the interpreter could just be guessing with what he's giving as an interpretation

I don't think "private use of tongues - Speaking in tongues to yourself and to God" is even a real thing no? Does scripture ever indicate that ever happens? And what would be the point?

It is real. How can anyone be prevented from doing it? Here is the Scripture that speaks of it: 1Co 14:2-4  For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.  (3)  But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.  (4)  He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

The tongues issue would not even be a problem if it were Biblically followed... the problem >is< it does not keep it's place Biblically and that in and of itself should be a understanding to the spiritually alive...

I came out of meeting where a preacher was preaching one night in Hollywood. Some School. It was very dark that night. My car was a tad more then a block away and as I was crossing the street He said "run". Now I was very happy and thought "run?" "why? I am not even scared". He came right back and said "when God tells you to do something you don't question it you just do it". Oh you KNOW when its GOD talking. I said "YES LORD" and started to run.

There is so much more to that story.. I wanted to point out what GOD says something as in Luke 11:13. He does not lie. You did it with John 3:16 but Luke 11:13 is what? He said ask the Father and He will give the holy spirit to them that ask. Jesus asked the Father and what happen to the 120? "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

Didn't Jesus said "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;". See I always read this as "will follow those who believe". And Jesus just told us what the Father told Him. And really we can toss out new tongues for now. Well casting out demons are we? Do you follow Christ? Do you believe? And you will then also lay hands on the sick and they shall be healed/recover. On and on.

For me.. I only asked for the holy Spirit. They asked if I wanted it I said yes. They read only what the bible said and prayed and said "thats it you got it". <--do you see that? They didn't question Him. They just took what was written and did what GOD said to do. No one said another word. NO ONE talked about tongues. I get up go sit down and .. tongues just came out. Exactly like what happen in the word.

So for me.. what can I say. Tongues was not talked about.. it just came out. I do wonder if some look at tongues like just speaking English or some other language. OH its SO MUCH MORE! yes that needed caps lol. But.. it is. The more I pray in the spirit.. it gets better and better (better not the best word) its as if you get closer and closer to Him. Thats whats always on my mind.. its ALWAYS Him/Jesus.. anyway. Not here to defend or debate sorry if it sounded like it.

Looking back at my life.. the times I have seen GOD work? Like each time was when I blindly believed. He said it.. Ok.. I believe and keep going. 100% faith.

There is a major difference between interpretation and translation.  The spiritual gift of interpretation of tongues is a response in the Spirit to a utterance of tongues spoken out in the group.  The interpretation may be in the form of a prayer, which is consistent with tongues actually being a form of prayer spoken to God;  or it may come as a prophecy for the people, activated by the tongues which took the form of intercession to God that the Word of the Lord would come forth.   An interpretation of tongues is given in faith and in response to the leading of the Holy Spirit from a person who has received the gift of interpretation of tongues from the Holy Spirit.

It has been known to happen that someone has spoken in tongues in a known language, and someone else who is a native speaker of that language has heard and understood it.  One example is of a English person speaking out in tongues, and a Chinese woman who heard her Cantonese language where the Holy Spirit telling her, "You need to go forward to receive Christ as your Saviour."  Because she knew that the particular gentleman did not know one word of Cantonese, she knew it was from the Lord and she did go forward and received Christ.  In another service, someone spoke in tongues, and a Welsh woman was amazed that the person, who was not Welsh, spoke her native language without any trace of an accent, which would have been totally impossible for anyone outside of Wales to do.   I have a personal friend in a church where I was a deacon, spoke in a Ghanaian rural dialect, which a Ghanaian visitor understood, and he was able to tell my friend exactly what he said, and it was praises to God for His mighty works.  There was absolutely no way my friend could know that village dialect.  I was praying quietly in tongues during a service, and a New Zealand Maori lady sitting beside me told that that God spoke encouraging things to her in her Maori language, and this was well before I had learned beginner Maori, and the language that came to her when I was praying in tongues was too sophisticated for me even if I had a smattering of beginner Maori.

So there are diversities of tongues, each for separate purposes which the Lord ordains as He wills.  Because we cannot put God into a box, we cannot limit His gifts to our finite understanding either.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
