NO  RIGHTEOUSNESS --- BE WARNED

Rather than repentance vs backsliding; let's call it, stumbling vs falling away since James tells us that we all stumble in many ways.

Once we believed and repented and turned to the Lord for forgiveness and were given faith by Jesus and were indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we become babes in Christ.  According to Heb 5 a babe is unskilful in the word of righteousness, needing to be tought or tought again: the first principals of the oracles of God before getting strong meat of understanding which is for the mature believer.  The elementary principals of the oracles of God are: repentance from dead works, faith towards God, doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement.  Repentance from dead works is the only do-over on that list, though the burden of the lost's resurrection of the dead and eternal judgement can be renewed to us by the Spirit since we are all eternal priests of the new covenant with both a word and a ministry of reconciliation from the Lord.

A beliver who stumbles becomes out of fellowship with the Lord, usully from their own guilt and usully due to a sin.  The promise of the new covenant and what makes it better than the old covenant is that the Lord writes his commandments into our hearts and minds; which is transforming our consciences to perceive sin as Jesus does.  Things that we once delighted in become points of conviction and once delivered, the Holy Spirit will apply the blood of Jesus to that heart to purge that conscience from dead works to better serve the living God and then the Spirit will move onto the next sin as he chooses.  It is thus that Jesus sanctifies and cleanses his church with the washing of water by the word which empowers us to even forgive ourselves and sleep the sleep of the innocent.  The Spirit illuminates the scriptures here a little and there a little so that 3 to 5 chapters of daily devotions will lead to daily miracles in our hearts and minds, enabling us to keep the Spirit of the new covenant where Israel couldn't keep just the letter of the old one.  The difference between stumbling and falling away is that when we stumble, we get back up.  We do this by renewing our fellowship with the Lord who is found in the scriptures by the ministry of the Holy Spirit which is the only place where babes in Christ can grow up!

I was trying to contrast repentance vs. backsliding and how God remembers your sin no more if you repent, but on the other hand if you backslide into a sinful life (the complete opposite is true) that God will only remember the wicked things you have done not the righteous.   One is turning from a sinful life to a righteous life.  The other is turning from righteousness life back to a sinful life, which is a different comparison then falling vs. stumbling, both of those would fall under backsliding.

So the doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment are 'meaty' things not 'milk' things.

When mature, overt miracles happen. The first overt miracle God seeks to perform in the life of each believer, is the crucifixion of their flesh based nature. Afterwards, other overt miracles indeed happen.

And one, having tasted of the heavenly gift, and of the powers of the age to come, (overt miracles) 
who chooses to fall away and remain backwards after such a mature point, is likely never to return to sincere faith,
seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, having put Him to an open shame.

Therefore let us remember the start of our faith, when we with zeal did the work of the Lord and followed the Lord with our whole heart.

I realize this topic has to keep coming up because there's always new believers. But this shouldn't be a troublesome issue except some people make it that way. I say God is clear that we are to always try to obey Him in whatever we do and say. The key words here are always try, and as we live as a Christian we keep getting better & better at this. So it should be obvious that a babe in Christ won't behave as righteously as a man who's been a believer for 20 yrs will. This is normal. What is not okay is the idea that we don't have to even try to behave righteously because God only sees the righteousness of His Son Jesus and HE attributes it to us. The people who preach this are wrong. Either they simply never learned the truth or they like doing what's wrong, and they hate doing what is right. I've known people like that. They call themselves Christians but obeying God, that means trying to behave as righteously as possible, is the furthest thing from their minds. They aren't interested in the things of God, so they concocted a theology that makes them seem righteous without having to so anything righteous. These people are out there and in the churches which is why this topic is so popular. These people hate those of us who strive to obey God so they constantly tell new believers they can live anyway they please. This is not true. We have to try to obey God which is why we must read the entire Bible. I found Proverbs tells us things God loves & hates very directly, and we need to know these things. Obviously, we can't obey God if we don't know much about HIM.

Yes, I agree that stumbling and backsliding are different.   Stumbling is where one falls into sin but immediately realizes his/her guilt and repents.  On the other, someone who backslides or falls-away is one that chooses to continue to live in their sin and refuses to repent/turn away from their sins.  One lives in the fear of God the other lives in defiance of God.
