I admire the women's modesty. You don't always see that in the Englishers. They sometimes are allowed a cell phone for business. The furniture they make is very quality but very expensive. The women also make beautiful quilts that they sell but they are also very expensive.

Some of that is all for show. My wife drove two Amish girls to the shore for holiday. When they get to their motel room, they change into English clothes and go to the beach. Much of that appearance is mandated by the bishops and a part of their rules. IOW if many of them were not required to dress that way, they wouldn't.

I'm not insinuating Amish girls are loose. They are mannerly and well behaved, the ones I know. Some of them love to get out of those clothes and into English clothes if they can do it without getting caught.

This reminds me of what Paul said about law (rules) only working on the outside of us and not changing the heart. Only Jesus can change a heart.  :)

I'm not implying anyone is loose or any of that, but that line reminded me of how law does nothing to change our hearts - but it does drive us to the Savior.

This is the real danger in any system where a person is born into it. I know of several very good Christian Amish men. I drove one of them to work today :)  Not all of them are believers though. I don't know how much salvation is really stressed in the Amish community. Since there are districts controlled by different bishops, I imagine it's different for different areas. I live next to a bishop.

If a person thinks they are doing God's will by being Amish, salvation could be something they haven't grasped. A percentage of Amish are only Amish because they don't want to be shunned. Most of them want to stay in the system. Others have run away from the Amish, married English and are shunned. They put a LOT of emphasis on outward appearance. When they go into a normal setting people often stare. The same things that happen in English families happen in Amish families, but it is swept under the table. They are human just like the rest of us.

.....anyways this is way off topic. Maybe the lessons from the Amish to us as believers is community can make us stronger. Close christian community is most often seen in church....so if you don't attend a body of believers, GO TO CHURCH if you can :)

When the Amish males and females turn 16 they go through what is called rumspringa. It is when they can have a taste of the english world. To test them and see if they really want to be amish. I believe it ends at 21. Some of the amish youth have left the amish community because of that. If they then feel committed the the amish way of life they will be baptized and then they can't go back. If they leave they will be shunned.

All depends...believe it or not someone can live on min. Wage in most places in the US right now.

What theyre not going to have in doing so is new cars and the latest and greatest, and raising a family would be difficult.

I will say this if i was single i could easily make it at around 10 bucks an hour, and have money to spare, still have a nice but used pickup and a few "toys" to keep me busy.

Now i have kids...so my expenses are far higher. But im still getting by. A big part of it is i dont have the debt so many Americans seem to be adicted to. I dont have car payments, or credit card payments, nor the latest and greatest of everything. I still have nice stuff but ive learned to prioritize, save, and deal shop.

America does have an inflation problem....but the reality of it is the inflation is a symptom of a bigger problem-its spending problem. Americans all the way from the poor all the way to the government has a spending problem.

Thanks. I was aware of this, but they leave at other times too. There was an Amish man who walked the roads about 10 miles away. He was an alcoholic and would walk the roads soused. This is the exception rather than the rule but these things happen.

Just dressed up human beings in a cult if you strip it down. We maybe could say a strict sect or community. It sounds less harsh.

Actually by amish law rumspringa can last as long or as short as the person wants. They can be on rumspringa for 40 years before returning. The family just assumes they arnt ready for the amish life. But when they do come back (if they do) they have to be baptised and give up all the worldly things and dedicate themselves to the amish way of life.

Traditionally it only lasts a few years but, at least with most amish communities theres no set time they have to do it. It can be 2 weeks 3 years or even never come back. The entire point is for them to decide its what they want and not what their parents want. Its actually not a bad system if you ask me.

They are human. They have the same problems with the flesh that everyone else has.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
