                               God's Wrath

                             WHEN? does it begin?

The references are from the Book of Revelation, where we see 5 witnesses as to the timing of God's Wrath.

WHEN God's wrath is poured out is important because God has told us specifically that Jesus will return and rescue believers before the final wrath.

"and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come".... 1 Thes 1:10

There are 2 Greek words that describe wrath.

The first is "thymos"..... it means intense rage over a short period of time. In the case of God's rage, it is a righteous rage against sin itself, similar to Jesus driving out the money changers from the temple.

The second is "orge"..... it basically carries the same meaning but the subtle difference is that it's a more long-standing anger over a more protracted period.

Both of these words are found in Rev 14:9-10:

"Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand,

he also will drink of the wine of the wrath (thymos) of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger;(orge) and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb."

These witnesses also speak of God's judgment, and it is impossible to consider a righteous God pouring out His wrath until He has judged. To do otherwise is impetuous - something God definitely is not. So when the witnesses speak of judgment, it must proceed wrath.

Let's look at what the witnesses tell or show us:

1st witness:

This witness is the Apostle John, and he tells us when God's wrath (thymos) ends.

"Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven angels who had seven plagues, which are the last, because in them the wrath (thymos) of God is finished."...Rev 15:1

The seven last plagues are in the seven bowls, which are shallow and poured out quickly.

Wrath is finished with these 7 bowls. John tells us they are the last aspect of the wrath of God.

If the bowls are the last portion of the plagues..... then some other portion is first..... this is just common sense.

" in them...... the wrath of God is finished"

John is the final witness. He doesn't tell us when the wrath of God begins, but he does tells us when the wrath of God ends.

2nd witness

The second witnesses are the souls of believers who were martyred for their faith, and what they have to say is very interesting:

"When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained;

and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”.... Rev 6:9

These martyrs are testifying prior to God's wrath being poured out.

They ask God when He will begin to judge.

If He hasn't begun to judge, He couldn't have begun to pour out His wrath yet either.

Notice they state that God has not yet begun to avenge their deaths ..... SO...... if the wrath of God was already begun at that point, God would already be avenging their deaths. For this reason the wrath of God cannot have begun prior to the 5th seal.

Therefore, God's wrath begins after the 5th seal, and,  before the 1st bowl.

3rd & 4th witness

They are 2 angels. They appear in the sky over the earth prior to something called the 'harvest'.

Jesus tells us what the harvest is.

"Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”....Matthew 13:30

The harvest is when the righteous are gathered into the Lord's barn, then later in verse 39, Jesus tells us the harvest is the end of the age and the reapers are the angels, so this harvest then is the rapture and it must proceed the wrath of God.

The testimony of the 1st angel......

"And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people;

and he said with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.”.... Rev 14:6-7

Notice the angel says that the hour of His judgment has come. So once God has judged, then and only then is  He ready to pour out His wrath. This angel also speaks the eternal gospel to the whole world. We see this  in Matthew 24:14:

“This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come."

This angel might be the Archangel of the rapture - this angel flies immediately prior to the rapture. Is this angel proclaiming the gospel to the whole world the same angel of the rapture.... " with the voice of an archangel"....... ?????

2nd angel:

The second angel witness proclaims:

 “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb."....Rev 14:9-10

"he WILL BE tormented".... this is future tense. This means that taking the mark of the beast happens PRIOR to the wrath of God.

Also, the wrath of God must take place after this angel speak because it's a conditional statement:

"IF" anyone........ "THEN" they'll be subject to the wrath of God.

5th witness:

There is a large group of witnesses, unbelievers,  who testify about the very day that God's wrath begins.

"and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”... Rev 6:16-17

These unbelievers see Jesus coming on the clouds and they ask to be hidden..... and crushed by the rocks.

They testify that the great day of God's wrath has finally come.

It is the very specific day that their wrath begins. This is parallel to the angel in Rev 14 saying it is the hour of judgment that has come. It is that very day and hour, the two things Jesus said in Matthew 24 that we could not know, the day and hour of His return!

Conclusion:

God has placed 5 very unique witnesses in the Book of Revelation to testify to the timing  of the  wrath of God, and it begins after the 6th seal...... and before the 1st bowl.

The Apostle John does not tell us specifically that the trumpets are God's Wrath. But if we put the testimonies of all 5 witnesses together, we can deduce that the trumpets are indeed the beginning of God's Wrath.

There is one very good pointer as to when God's wrath starts.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) ... 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened (Mt 24:15–22).

This is doubly supported in that it is called "Jacob's Trouble". Israel, having heard the gospel and even studied the Man Who they so carelessly murdered some 2,000 year ago, will still agree that a Gentile king will take God's place in a Temple in Jerusalem.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

- Matthew 24:14 (KJV)

I believe the elect will be used mightily in spreading the gospel when they are delivered up to give account of why he or she will not submit to the Antichrist.  This is that awesome time when, without premeditating what we will say, the gospel will be broadcast throughout the world by the Holy Spirit speaking through us.  Also, the two witnesses will be preaching until just a very short time before the second advent of our Lord and Savior.    Selah

But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

I believe the millennium is being alluded to in Revelation 14:6. After the millennium (a period of teaching those who had never been taught the Truth of God's Word), the Great White Throne Judgment will take place.

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

- Revelation 6:12-17 (KJV)

Verse 17 gives us the timing of God’s wrath.  When God unleashes His anger on His enemies, it happens at the very end of this earth age.    Selah

It should be obvious to everyone on earth with access to news information that some kind of cataclysmic event will probably occur in the near future. The lessons of history, over population, natural disasters and the preparedness of nations for war are all dire warning signs for us. But we who study the Bible can, and should know what the prophets tell us about the end of this age. Amos 3:7

The Book of Revelation tells us about a sequence of terrible events called the Seal, Trumpet and Bowl judgements and we note that the Sixth Seal is referred to as ‘the great Day of the Lord’s wrath’. Then the Seventh Seal is a time gap in heaven of ‘about a ½ hour’. This calculates to about 20 years of earth time, using the one day in heaven = 1000 years on earth formula. This will allow for all that must happen until the glorious Return of Jesus.

Therefore, the Sixth Seal is the event that the Lord intends to use in order to punish the nations, who at present conspire to annihilate Israel. Their attack and its consequences are prophesied in Psalms 83 and Micah 4:11-12. Prophecies that parallel the Sixth Seal are; Isaiah 34:4 ‘the sky rolled up like a scroll’, Isaiah 2:21 ‘hide in caves, etc’, Zeph.1:14 ‘The Day of the Lords wrath, a Day of doom and disaster’, then in Amos 1 – it says how the Lord will send fire to destroy the Ishmaelite peoples [those mentioned in Psalm 83] for all their crimes. There are over 70 verses in the Bible that speak of a forthcoming fire judgement and most of them state clearly that it is the Lord Himself who instigates this fire by using the power of the sun. This is so the secular survivors can carry on in their disbelief of God.

Joel 1:15 & 19 ‘The Day of the Lord comes, a mighty destruction from the Almighty and fire has consumed the trees and pastures.

Habakkuk 3:12 Furiously, You traverse the earth, in anger, You trample on the nations.

Isaiah 66:15-16 The Lord will judge with fire....He will test all mankind, many will be slain.   Jeremiah 25:33Those who the Lord has killed in that Day, will lie scattered from one end of the earth to the other, they will fertilize the ground.

How He will do this, is told to us in Isaiah 30:26-30 where it is undeniably written about ‘a devouring fire, sent by the Lord Himself’, that is caused by: ‘the sun shining seven times stronger’. This can only be a Coronal Mass Ejection; something that the earth has experienced in the past and is expected to happen again, that can have worldwide devastating consequences - a seemingly natural occurrence that will maintain the hidden-ness of the Lord. With this scenario in mind, many other prophecies make sense, passages like Ezekiel 20:47-48, about a fire in the Land, kindled by the Lord, and 2 Peter 3:7 & 10, where Peter says: ‘The Day of the Lord will come like a thief, the Day the heavens disappear and flames bring all the earth to judgement’. Psalms 18:7-15

The four best passages that describe the Return of Jesus in His glory, to commence His Millennial reign and visible to all and NOT as a thief and unexpectedly, are; Zechariah 14:3-15, Matthew 24:27-31, Matthew 25:31-46, Revelation 19:11-19.

We are told that on that Day; ‘the Great Day of the Sovereign Lord’, Rev. 16:14, there will be an earthquake and the sun and moon darkened, but only in Jerusalem and that Jesus will destroy the attacking army of the Anti-Christ by the Sword of His Word.

 He then gathers His faithful people from around the earth and commences His Millennium reign. These four descriptions do not mention a worldwide fire judgement and as the world will have just experienced the Great Tribulation, for that judgement to occur at the same time as the Return, is simply not said to happen then, as well as being unnecessary and illogical.

Hi Adhoc,

Sorry brother, but I totally disagree,

Tribulation is different from God's wrath.

Tribulation is "thlipsis".... a pressing, pressing together, pressure

Tribulation is also persecution, affliction, anguish.

Scripture tells us in Romans 5:3..... "And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation  brings about perseverance"

Romans 12:12...."rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer"

2 Thes 1:4.... "therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions  which you endure"

Rev 1:9....."I, John, your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation  and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus"

Rev 2:10.... "‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation  for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life"

Scripture encourages the saints to persevere.

Look again at Romans 5:3-5:

"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;

and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Do you see it?

"We exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope"

Scripture does not equate tribulation with wrath. Two totally different words.

Wrath is "thymos and orge"...... tribulation is "thlipsis"

Thymos and orge is God's wrath/anger towards sin......

Thlipsis is God's testing, His proving..... "“Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”....Acts 14:22

missmuffet'

You are 100%correct. God's wrath will not fall on the born again believers.

BUT..... the born again believers will go thru a testing period.

And that testing period is the tribulation. the great tribulation.

Our brothers and sisters in Christ, in 100 countries around the world, are being persecuted and afflicted, tortured and executed.... daily. Their lives are being torn apart. They are scattered into the wilderness. Their homes are taken from them. Their livelihoods are no more. They escape with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

They are in tribulation.... in great tribulation.

But they persevere, not caving in to the pressure. They hold to the hope that is in them. knowing that if they lose their lives, it is for the Glory of God.

I hope to have the kind of faith that they have if ever I have to face the same tribulation.

But they are NOT in God's wrath.

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;

and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Do you see it?

"We exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope"

Scripture does not equate tribulation with wrath. Two totally different words.

Wrath is "thymos and orge"...... tribulation is "thlipsis"

Thymos and orge is God's wrath/anger towards sin......

Thlipsis is God's testing, His proving..... "“Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”....Acts 14:22

Thank you for your candid reply. It was refreshing. My answer is this.

"Tribulation" is defined as; "A cause or state of great suffering". The word does not indicate who causes it, or why the suffering person is in that state.

In the Bible, and in life, tribulation can be caused by circumstances. Cancer, divorce and/or bankruptcy cause tribulation. Then, men who are maintaining God's order "wield  the sword". They cause tribulation on the lawless. These same men might abuse their wives and so cause Tribulation. And then the unbeliever may cause a state of tribulation on the Believer. Generally, all men who live 50 years will have tribulation in their lives at some time or another. And the Christian is warned that because he/she has chosen a way at odds with the world, he/she will be hated and suffer tribulation AT THE HAND OF MEN.

But you spoke of the GREAT TRIBULATION - a specific time on the whole earth when God's anger has reached His limit and He causes a state of great suffering on the UNGODLY. The cause of God's vengeance is ungodliness and the ungodliness provokes Him to wrath - wrath in such measure as to cause a state of Tribulation. Tribulation is one thing, and WRATH is another. So, if we ignore the Chapter division of Romans Chapter 2, we can see that the thought of judgment on the ungodly continues from Chapter 1 verse 18 all the way through to Chapter 2 verse 9. If we leave out the detail the thought is this;

1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; ... 2:8 ... unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

Therefore, I am in agreement with all your proofs of "Tribulation" as the portion of every Christian who lives godly. I add though, that God is, sooner or later, provoked to wrath by men and unleashes a time of Tribulation so GREAT that the world has never seen this level of Tribulation before, and never will see it again. This point of unrestrained wrath is when the Beast is set up in the Holy of Holies of a Temple in Jerusalem, as predicted by Daniel.
